Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit Riots Film Casts Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor
Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, and Jack Reynor have joined the ensemble for Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming film about the 1967 Detroit Riots.

Bigelow is directing with Mark Boal penning the script. John Boyega recently joined the ensemble.

Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures is financing with Bigelow and Boal producing along with Ellison, Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson. Greg Shapiro will executive produce.

The crime drama is set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967. Although no studio is yet attached, producers are targeting a release in 2017, the 50th anniversary of the riots.

Character descriptions are being kept under wraps. While this is considered an ensemble piece, Poulter, O’Toole, and Reynor are expected to have the most screen time in the movie.

Anthony Mackie Reunites With ‘Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal In Detroit Riots Pic
Anthony Mackie has been set for a key role in the Untitled Detroit Project that Kathryn Bigelow will direct from the Mark Boal script for Annapurna. Mackie joins John Boyega, Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole and Jack Reynor in a drama framed around the 1967 Detroit race riots that devastated the city over five summer days. For Mackie, this marks a re-team with Bigelow and Boal from the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. Production is just getting underway on a film that explores the systemic racism in urban Detroit and it is being targeted for a 2017 release date for the 50th anniversary of the riots. Bigelow and Boal are producing with Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman. Matthew Budman, Colin Wilson and Greg Shapiro are exec producing.

Mackie will play a returning Vietnam vet who figures prominently in the flashpoint drama. He will perform the role before reprising his Falcon role for two sequels to The Avengers, directed by Captain America: Civil War helmers Joe and Anthony Russo. Mackie also has a date to play Johnnie Cochran in the Justin Chadwick-directed Signal Hill. He’s repped by UTA and Inspire Entertainment.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit Riots Film Casts ‘Legends of Tomorrow’s’ Joseph David-Jones
Joseph David-Jones has been cast in a lead role in Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming film about the 1967 Detroit riots, Variety has learned exclusively.

The actor joins John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jack Reynor, and Ben O’Toole in the ensemble. Character descriptions are being kept under wraps.

Bigelow is directing from Mark Boal’s script. Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures is financing with Bigelow and Boal producing along with Ellison, Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson. Greg Shapiro will executive produce.

David-Jones plays Green Arrow aka Connor Hawke in the CW series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. He recently appeared in Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Allegiant as officer in the Factionless Army.

David-Jones is represented by Prestige Talent Agency and Luber Roklin Entertainment.

Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit Riot Drama Adds Kaitlyn Dever
Kaitlyn Dever has joined the cast of Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit riots drama.

Also Dever joins Hannah Murray as the female leads of the movie that is currently shooting in the Boston area.

The cast already sees Jacob Latimore, Algee Smith, Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, and John Boyega on the call sheet.

Details are being kept under lock and and key but the script by Mark Boal is set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five summer days in 1967.

Bigelow is directing and producing. Producig alongsider her are Boal, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson. Annapurna is financing.

Dever co-starred opposite Tim Allen in the sitcom Last Man Standing and has appeared in movies such as Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now, Daniel Destin Cretton’s Short Term 12, and Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children. Dever is repped by UTA and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

Murray may be best known for playing the character of Gilly in HBO’s Game of Thrones. She was also one of the original leads in the British series Skins and stars in the historical drama The Chosen, directed by Antonio Chavarrias.

'Straight Outta Compton' Star Jason Mitchell Joins Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit
Jason Mitchell, who broke out in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton playing Eazy-E, has joined the sprawling cast of Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit riots drama.

Bigelow is directing the movie, which is currently in production in the Boston area, and has actors John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, Algee Smith, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, Kaitlyn Dever and Hannah Murray on the call sheet.

Details are being kept under lock and key, but the script by Mark Boal is set against the backdrop of the devastating riots that took place in Detroit over five summer days in 1967.

Mitchell has been on a roll since booking his breakout in Compton, last year’s surprise hit biopic on the rise and fall of rap group N.W.A. He also was seen in Keanu, the New Line comedy from Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, and recently wrapped production on Dee Rees’ Mudbound, which also stars Carey Mulligan and Jason Clarke.

He also recently wrapped shooting Legendary’s big-budget monster movie, Kong: Skull Island, which is slated for release in March 2017.

John Krasinski, who established his leading-man film cred starring in Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, has nabbed a key role in Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit riots drama.

Bigelow is directing the movie that currently is in production in the Boston area, and has actors John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, Algee Smith, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, Jason Mitchell, Kaitlyn Dever and Hannah Murray as characters on both sides of the racial divide and both sides of the police and civilian line.

Details and character information are being kept under lock and key, but the script by Mark Boal is a crime thriller set against the backdrop of the devastating riots that took place in Detroit over five summer days in 1967.

Bigelow is producing with Boal, Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson, with Greg Shapiro executive producing. Annapurna is financing.

The WME-repped Krasinski may have made his name on NBC’s comedy The Office but has been making major inroads with movies since that show went off the air as well as flexing his more dramatic chops. Based on the events of Sept. 11, 2012, in Benghazi, 13 Hours grossed $52 million domestically but has proven to be a massive hit in the home entertainment market.

Krasinski, who directed and starred in the recent dramatic comedy The Hollars, also is starring as the title character in Jack Ryan, Amazon’s thriller series based on the Tom Clancy books about a daring intelligence analyst.

Jeremy Strong, Chris Chalk, Austin Hébert, Ephraim Sykes, Laz Alonso, Nathan Davis Jr., Malcolm David Kelley, Peyton Alex Smith, and Leon Thomas III have rounded out the cast in Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled film centered on the 1967 Detroit Riots.

They join previously-announced stars John Boyega, John Krasinski, Jason Mitchell, Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, Jacob Latimore, Joseph David-Jones, Algee Smith, Kaitlyn Dever, and Hannah Murray. Bigelow is directing the crime drama from an original screenplay by Mark Boal. She’s also producing with Boal, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson, with Greg Shapiro executive producing.

The pic, Bigelow’s 10th as a director, is currently in production. The film is being financed and produced by Annapurna Pictures.
