If R1 dabbled it's toe in the world of Legends/Old EU, this looks to be a full on belly flop.

That's true. But I also mean it's going for all sleek surfaces and clean compositions and edgy dark spaces. Not what I expected, really.

my guess is it's probably how lots of them will look since it's p much star wars with contemporary aesthetics/tech applied to it, ie. what you get if you're not 'going for something' in the way 7 and 8 are

I think the way they've recontextualised all the subsequent commentary about the Falcon being a "piece of junk" and "garbage" is fairly deft.

Also Lando's "what have you done to my ship"

It has a similar aesthetic to Rogue One because Neil Lamont was the Production Designer for both.
