What people miss when they compare the metascores for this and The Dark Knight is that The Dark Knight has 16 perfect scores, while Panther has 10.

And ultimately the most important factor are the year end critics' top ten lists. And that usually depends on the number of critics who enthusiastically loved the film rather than the number of detractors which The Dark Knight had more of compared to Panther. Take The Tree of Life for example.

At the end of 2008, The Dark Knight ended up with more top spots than any other movie that came out during the year by far. Even the ones with better metascores like Slumdog.

Fos instance Paddington 2 with 88/100 or The Last Jedi with 85/100 were not really better received than The Dark Knight. It's just that since back then the number of reviews counted, were much fewer, a couple of bad ratings could have hurt the overall score with a bigger impact compared to now.£

I don’t see how this is relevant to what I was saying. The variables are not 100% harmonious. Not everyone reviewing Black Panther also reviewed The Dark Knight and vice-versa. So comparison by how many 100s a film has isn’t necessarily the optimal metric either. Get Out proved last year how little the overall 100s can matter with early releases. The reason I compared it to The Dark Knight is because its regarded as the epitome of the superhero genre and it came the closest to getting a BP nod. It was not about whether one is better reviewed than the other but the fact that Black Panther does have an extremely high critical consensus within its genre.

Get Out was a rare breed and there is an explanation for why. Suffice to say something like that won't be happening anytime soon. Metascore and the number of perfect scores on metacritic are often a very accurate early indicator of the film's place on the year end top ten lists and the overall critical approval.£

This was pretty much as I expected. Incredible visuals, great music, fantastic villain (at least for a Marvel movie). The third act was definitely the weakest. And I hated the humor. All of it felt really misplaced, and especially
when that car blew up and she was sliding down the hill with the steering wheel in her hand.
It's pretty good, but not even close to the best CBM of all time, not even one of the best since TDK. It's still high up on the Marvel ranking for me though.

8.2/10
