The plot is very good. Not on the level of The Dark Knight or Spider-Man 2, but still very promising. Very good pacing.
The cinematography is great, except for the fighting sequences.
Sound Mixing is incredibly well-done. The editing is good, though some cuts are sloppy.
It definitely a huge threat to win Stunt Ensemble at SAGA 2019.
8/10 for me.
I just realized that Wakanda essentially just consists of 4 sets (none of which look particularly interesting), which feels a bit lazy or maybe they were short on money (not likely because it's Disney, they can thow all the money in the world at the screen).
It's also a bit rich that the King of Wakanda hands over
Klaw, a public enemy,
to the CIA (whose representative considered respecting due process rights a laughing matter in Civil War by the way) but then again most of the MCU falls apart really easily when you try to look at any of its stuff more closely in any kind of serious way.
For my money, The Dark Knight is as good as it gets in the blockbuster arena. Since that film came out 10 years ago no other superhero film has been able to top it, be it within the DCEU or the MCU or any other kind of superhero film. Maybe it's because that film works as a crime thriller just as much as a superhero film and hence it is able to transcend its genre conventions and limitations. Black Panther still operates squarely within a rather conventional framework and story.
Black Panther is a decent enough film but I have seen better superhero films that left a more lasting impression on me and on cinema, notably Spiderman 2, The Dark Knight Rises, Logan, X2, Batman Begins, Batman 1989, Superman: The Movie, etc.
