I share the same feeling about the examples that you mentioned, but in my personal belief, Haynes is the antithetical of doing it safe. He's known for his formalistic approach in his works. He might fail in his experimental endeavors but he would nevertheless go for it and that always prompts me to remain intrigued for his upcoming projects.£

Honestly, I have a similar impression and I thought I was alone on this. Something about the Carol trailer gives me the vibe that it is trying hard to be subtle for the sake of being subtle rather than letting that happen naturally. As a result I did not feel much passion from the trailer. Room looks emotionally honest and passionate. I'm significantly more excited for it.
Suffragette over Carol honestly is just because I'm currently more fanboying Mulligan than Mara.
