Tom Hardy is set to star in a new BBC series, "Taboo," with the prolific Ridley Scott as executive producer.

The series, a historical thriller set in the early 19th century, will be eight one-hour episodes. It's created by Hardy's "Locke" director Steven Knight ("Dirty Pretty Things," "Eastern Promises").

Here's the official synopsis:

Set in 1813, TABOO follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations, Britain and America.

For some historical context, Knight elaborates on the nature of Hardy's character:

"This man, James Delaney, is a deeply flawed and deeply troubled human being. His greatest struggle will be against the East India Company which, throughout the nineteenth century, was the equivalent of the CIA, the NSA and the biggest, baddest multi-national corporation on earth, all rolled into one self righteous, religiously motivated monolith."

"Taboo" is looking toward a January 2015 production start date. Scott's Scott Free banner and Hardy's Hardy Son & Baker are producing.

FX will be tackling “Taboo” territory with its latest series. The cable channel has picked up the period drama “Taboo,” a period drama from Ridley Scott, Steven Knight (“Locke”) and Tom Hardy, the latter of whom will also star in the series.

The eight-episode series, which was commissioned by BBC One, was created by Knight. The series will also air in the UK.

Scheduled to begin production in the U.K. next year, “Taboo,” set in 1813, will star Hardy as rogue adventurer James Keziah Delaney, who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds and is bent on avenging his father’s death. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, Delaney sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a very dangerous game.

Scott, Hardy and Knight are executive producing, as are Scott Free’s Kate Crowe, Dean Baker of Hardy Son & Baker, and Gene Stein from Sonar Entertainment, which will distribute the project internationally.

“‘Taboo’ is the first major production our company, Hardy Son & Baker, is setting sail on, and it gives me great pleasure to know that we are in partnership with FX and the BBC,” Hardy said. “I believe with the high standard of creative talent — with Steve Knight and Ridley Scott at the helm — and with the support and backing of these two great broadcasters, we have found the perfect home and team for ‘Taboo.’

“We are privileged to have landed ‘Taboo’ and to work with this exceptional team led by Ridley, Tom and Steven,” FX Networks and FX Productions president of original programming Eric Schrier added. “Tom’s passion for this project, from conceiving the original idea with his father to portraying James Delaney, promises to infuse this epic story with great personal passion and credibility.”

“Taboo” is tentatively slated for a mid-2016 premiere.

“FX is the perfect partner to engage with this dark, fantastic world that Tom and Steven have created,” Scott said of the upcoming series. “We’re glad to have them on board.”

Danish director Kristoffer Nyholm, who helmed the acclaimed Scandinavian series The Killing, has boarded Tom Hardy event TV series Taboo. Nyholm, credited with playing a major part in the rise of so-called Nordic Noir, will direct the first four episodes of the eight-part series. Hardy stars as James Keziah Delaney, who returns to London in 1813 after 10 years in Africa to discover that he has been left a mysterious legacy by his father. Driven to right the wrongs of the past, Delaney finds himself in a face-off against the East India Company, whilst playing a dangerous game between two warring nations — Britain and America. Steven Knight, whose collaborations with Hardy include Peaky Blinders and Locke, has created and written the series.

This is a wonderful character-driven tale, and is very much the kind of dark, multifaceted world of drama and intrigue that I’m drawn to,” says Nyholm. “For me, it feels like a natural follow on from The Killing and The Enfield Haunting. We have a fantastic team on board to help bring it to life, and I look forward to that process.”

Nyholm’s credits also include Paris-set crime drama Jo; hit Danish TV series The Village; as well as Sky Living’s well-received The Enfield Haunting.

Hardy continues his prolific ubiquity, most recently playing the lead in Mad Max: Fury Road and next to be seen in Brian Helgeland’s Legend playing both Kray Twins, as well as opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s highly-anticipated The Revenant.

Tom Hardy's FX/BBC One Drama Taboo Adds 13, Begins Production
Tom Hardy‘s next small-screen project is shaping up nicely.

Taboo, an eight-episode collaboration between FX and BBC One, stars Hardy as James Delaney, a man who returns to 1814 London after spending 10 years in Africa. Upon learning he’s been left a “mysterious legacy by his father,” James finds himself at odds with the East India Company and becomes entangled in a “dangerous game between two warring nations — Britain and America.”

In addition to starring in the project, created by Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight, Hardy will also serve as an executive producer. Production begins this week in London.

Joining Hardy in Taboo are Michael Kelly (House of Cards) as an American doctor named Dumbarton; Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) as Delaney’s nemesis Sir Stuart Strange; Oona Chaplin as James’ half-sister Zilpha; David Hayman as James’ man-servant Brace; Jessie Buckley as Lorna Bow, who “lays claim to James’ father’s will”; Ashley Walters as a dangerous woman from James’ past in Africa; Jefferson Hall (Vikings) as Zilpha’s husband Thorne Geary; Ed Hogg as a cross-dressing spy named Godfrey; Leo Bill as Stuart Strange’s ruthless, fashion-forward accomplice Wilton; Christopher Fairbank as Ibbotson, to whom James owes a favor; Richard Dixon as Stuart Strange’s right-hand man Pettifer; Jason Watkins as the Prince Regent’s right-hand man Solomon Coop; and Nicholas Woodeson (Rome) as the Delaney’s family lawyer.

A premiere date has yet to be announced.
