Watched the film yesterday, gotta say I hated it. I think it's a horrible movie. And I firmly do believe it won't be nominated come Oscar season. I appreciate the direction of the film, I love the cinematography, music, and visual effects. But that's where the positives stop for me. Sicario was one of my favorite films of last year. And I think Prisoners was awesome as well. The thing about those 2 films that really shined for me was the dynamic and chemistry between the characters. I think Dennis Villeneuve does that best. The chemistry between Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin was fantastic. Same thing in Prisoners, with Viola Davis, Gyllenhaal, and Hugh Jackman.

In Arrival, the characters were pretty weak. Especially Jeremy Renner who really brought nothing to the film. The relationship between Amy Adams' character and Renners was not believable. In fact Renners character had the most laughable line of the year in any film with "Do you want to make a baby" which I think is an absolute joke. Forrest Whitaker's character was one dimensional for the most part, and didn't have much of a presence. Amy Adams was fine. Didn't hate the character of Louise, but I don't think it was as great as people make it out to be. The dynamic between the characters was just lost, and it really rubbed me the wrong way. It's very odd for Dennis to do that.

The story is the biggest problem for me. It makes no sense whatsoever. I honestly don't understand how people even like this. So the aliens came to earth, because they have a weapon, this weapon is her seeing the future. But she only remember seeing the future when they tell her because the whole film is so fabricated. Why couldn't she remember the whole language in the beginning of the film to spare us this piece of garbage.

The film is filled with plot holes. So she stopped the Chinese leader from firing at the aliens because she told him the exact same words as his mother? What is this BvS? How did they decipher the aliens language? That is NEVER explained in the film. NEVER. We just see them trying to crack it with computers and software, but it's never explained properly. And all of a sudden Amy Adams can understand everything. The Aliens came to provide a gift to humanity, because humanity will need their help in 3000 years. And they just leave. That's it. The twist wasn't satisfying. I felt robbed. I walked away with a real bad taste in my mouth.

Here's the thing, when filmmakers want to do twists in movies, they have to earn it. The twist in this movie wasn't earned. It wasn't set up well. In fact it felt like a cop-out. It felt put in there as a cheat. I felt cheated by the end of it. And I know a lot of the people I were talking to by the end of it, were not satisfied at all. It was just a bizarre turn. I know for a sure I didn't like it, and I am confident this film will not be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. You heard it here first.

3/10. It's bad.
My goodness. Just because you didn't understand it doesn't make it stupid or bad. It's the other way around.
The Alien came to earth because they need OUR help in 3000 yrs. In order for us to help them they came to teach us their language so that we can help them. The film is complex than you think.

Louise: Who is this child? I don't understand?
Alien Costello: Louise see future.
Alien Costello: Louise have weapon.
Alien Costello: Louise use weapon.
Louise: ???

Weapon=could mean gift, technology, LANGUAGE

"Sapir-Whorf hypothesis or Linguistic relativity". Go check it up.
Alien see future=Alien language is non-linear.
Alien Language=learning the alien language allowing her to access the dimension of time

The Alien isn't talking about the weapon that was use to try to blow up the ship. That weapon means LANGUAGE. It means Louise finally have that "gift" to learn to see and use the Alien's LANGUAGE. So Louise is able to see her future without fully understanding what is going on. At the beginning she think this is either a dream, hallucinating or ect.

General Shen is probably another character that understood part of the Alien language and that you can tap into the future. That's why he gave her the phone number and told her what she need to say in the future so that she can use it in the past. Once again TIME IS NON-LINEAR for Louise at this point. That's why General Shen said he doesn't understand or know how she sees and think so he gave her the info(which means he knows she see time in a non-linear way). She still haven't fully grasp of how to use or control it.

The whole point about this movie and theme isn't about the ALIEN. Maybe you should go read up on the more technicality about the whole movie somewhere else that could better explain to you than I could. But at least I understood some of the wonderful complexity of this movie in almost an enlightening way.

Characters being weak... well... I'm not sure they were weak but they weren't fleshed out either.

The thing is this movie is not a character-study film. Not even close. It doesn't need fleshed out characters in order to deliver on it's intentions.

It's that Ian doesn't work that well on paper but damn, they really should've gotten a better actor to play him. I think someone like Gyllenhaal or Bale would've done so much more with so little.

I don't think Renner is on their level, but he was good in Arrival. No complaints from me.

Renner might not be inferior to them but he has yet to showcase that. He doesn't really have the resume so far. With the exception of a couple of roles, he's been pretty consistent in his approach towards acting and delivered incredibly similar performances. Which makes him entertaining but not exciting yet.

How are his turns in The Hurt Locker and American Hustle and The Town remotely similar? Or North Country? Even his sturdy everyman in the Avengers films is different to his fraidy-cat nervy dude in the Mission: Impossible films.

He literally has no clue when it comes to judging a nuanced performance. If you're not completely obvious about it, you're being similar to him.
