13 Reasons Why
Has a really weird tonal dissonance, because at times it feels like some of the trash you find on CW, and other times it's like something that would air on HBO.
The show is very much about the business of itself, if that makes sense. Like, the characters take themselves way too seriously and it's packed with cliche, which makes it hard to suspend disbelief. Which therefore makes the disturbing/dark stuff even more hard to believe, because they just feel so separated from the rest of this "world."
There's also this incredibly frustrating shit where non-white characters keep hinting at how different things are for them and how privileged the white characters are, but it's NEVER fucking explored more than just a passing, passive-aggressive comment, which makes it an insult to them, to the white characters, and to the viewer for having to go sit through all this nonsense.
Otherwise, it's like porn for depressives, cuz the entire premise is something I fantastized about doing when I was in high school, and I venture to guess a lot of depressive an/or suicidal teens have thought the same.
Minnette gives an admittedly relatable performance, and both he and Langford are cute AF
