In Superman Returns it was, from a visual (haha!) standpoint, pretty cool. But it looked too much like if it were some kind of wave, and I prefer a beam, personally.

A power which was introduced much late, in Silver age, where new powers were invented everyday out of the ass. Why not super ventriloquism or time traveling ability then?

What made Lex Luthor for me was the iconic character played by a great, well known actor! like Hackman and Spacey. But this may work very well too.
