I can understand Loach's perspective a lot though. He's a socialist and it shows a lot in his films. Of course he won't like these movies.

But can we end this trend of asking old dudes what they think about Marvel movies though? A lot of them are gonna hate it.
Don't think it's a question of them being old dudes aside from the fact that they have seen and worked on a giant number of films over the course of their very long careers and found this current kind of mainstream entertainment to be lacking by comparison.

Bruh, that's the long and more polished way of saying they're old af.

So are you saying that older people don't know what they're talking about even though arguably their whole lives have been immersed in film? These guys know their stuff and have been passionate about cinema long enough to give you their perspective and back it up. Their age is irrelevant because age does not prevent you from enjoying a film that someone from a younger generation enjoys. They also know the history and the craft of filmmaking and what drives the biggest film studio in the US to make these films 4 times a year.

I kinda agree with them but at the same time I realize it's just an opinion these guys have and it doesn't matter what they think or what I think of Marvel when the global reach and box office power of these films are so ginormous.

At the end of the day they're boomers so of course they won't really enjoy these films compared to someone who literally grew up on it. Context and placing films against the current backdrop has a lot to do with how much you enjoy a work.

I respect these dudes 100% and understand their importance to film and the impact they have had. What I'm against is media outlets are baiting boomers in the film industry to drop their thoughts on these movies. Most of them are not going to like them but it certainly is a story that gets clicks and causes conversation.

They can say whatever the hell they want with a filmography behind them to back it up, and people can still adore these movies and think otherwise. It's a free world.

But Marty didn't stop there. His latest stop was Italy apparently and he said, paraphrasing, 'female leads are story detractors and don' t work as good without a man beside them', so I decided to check out completely. I mean, how appropriate, since all of his movies support the opinion, but that's not a good argument, at all.

There are takes I just cannot accept in this day and age.

I don't think that it's the generational disconnect that's the origin of their dislike because I don't think someone like Ken Loach misunderstands these films because he's older than most of the audience. It seems rather that he aims for something different and more ambitious with his films than these 'products' as he calls them.

Honestly, imo let's get all the great directors from Steven Spielberg to Mike Leigh to weigh in on this and see what they think because I am sure you'll still find people from that generation liking these films too. And yet, Spielberg had trouble getting films like Lincoln financed when superhero films were conquering theaters everywhere...Spielberg, the guy who created the summer blockbuster in the first place. If people grow up on this superhero stuff and think it's high art because nothing else is getting the attention or the funding then it's probably time to shift gears in terms of what we give attention to in popular culture.

The fact is, if those media outlets asked every notable film director active in the 70s and 80s for their opinion it would not change the consumer behaviour of most of the audience that goes to watch these films. The people who love these films will continue to love them and spend money on tickets to see them and smaller movies will suffer and fail financially without getting the much-needed attention of the audience because monetary success is what drives studios' decision-making. Lest all MCU films next year underperform drastically, the company will not alter a single thing in terms of the creative process or the formula.

What it will reveal is the respect and understanding (or lack thereof) of film made in a different time and place (context, yes?). These people are not content to love these giant films: they what everyone else to love these films too and praise them and shower them with prestige so as to cement them as the highest form of cinematic art...and I just can't go that far in most cases.
