ImageMichael Mann is close to a deal to helm 20th Century Fox’s Go Like Hell. The film is based on the book by A.J. Baime, which focuses on the 1966 battle between Ford and Ferrari when an American car won the Le Mans race for the first time in history. Baime’s story focuses on Henry Ford II, young visionary Lee Iacocca, and former racing champion turned engineer Carroll Shelby. The three worked together to reinvent the Ford company and eventually became the first Americans to win the 24-Hours of Le Mans race in France.

Showblitz reports that while no casting has begun, Brad Pitt has been considered as the lead. Mann has a number of projects that he’s considering as his next directing vehicle, including an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s Agincourt, a novel centered around the 15th century Battle of Agincourt. He’s also circling the adventure film Gold, produced by Paul Haggis. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of Baime’s Go Like Hell

Recently this week Mann bought himself a new Ferrari, maybe this is the start of something to do with this upcoming project.

Tom Cruise, ‘Oblivion’ Director Joseph Kosinski May Reteam for Fox’s ‘Go Like Hell’
The movie chronicles automaker Henry Ford II’s rivalry with Enzo Ferrari

Tom Cruise and “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski are planning to reteam for the racing movie “Go Like Hell,” multiple individuals familiar with the 20th Century Fox project have told TheWrap.

20th Century Fox had no comment.

The film is based on A.J. Baime’s book “Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans.”

While there are no deals in place yet for Cruise or Kosinski, the duo are looking to develop “Go Like Hell” as a starring vehicle for Cruise.

Story is set in the early 1960s when the Ford Motor Company was falling behind in the sports car marketplace, with baby boomers preferring to buy fast, stylish automobiles rather than safe, comfortable vehicles.

Cruise is circling the role of Henry Ford II, who with the help of young visionary Lee Iacocca and former racing champion-turned-engineer Carroll Shelby, concocted a scheme to reinvent the Ford company by entering the high-stakes world of European car racing, which had been dominated by Enzo Ferrari up until then.

The trio set out to design, build and race a car that could beat Ferrari at his own game at the world’s most prestigious and dangerous race — Le Mans.

Jason Keller wrote a draft of the script back when Michael Mann was developing the project. Paramount has been developing its own version of the story as it owns Shelby’s life rights, as well as a script originally written by Lisa Schrager.

Cruise and Kosinski are coming off of “Oblivion,” which grossed $286 million worldwide. Cruise will first shoot “Mission: Impossible 5″ with frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. The actor knows his way around the race track, having starred in Tony Scott’s 1990 action-drama “Days of Thunder.”

Cruise next stars in Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” which Warner Bros. will release June 6. He’s represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.

Brad Pitt Courted to Join Tom Cruise in 'Go Like Hell'
Brad Pitt might be reteaming with Tom Cruise for their first feature together since 1994’s Interview with a Vampire.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Pitt is being courted to star alongside Cruise in Go Like Hell, Fox’s racing movie based on Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, written by A. J. Baime.

Cruise is attached to portray car designer Carroll Shelby in the project, which has Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) in the director’s chair.

Lucas Foster and Alex Young are producing the true story of the competition between the Ford Motor Company and Italian sports car designer Enzo Ferrari, which culminated at the 1966 Le Mans race.

Pitt was once attached to star in the project when it had Michael Mann on board as director back in 2009. He has remained interested in the project and has had talks with the new team. With Kosinski supervising the writing -- Cormac and Marianne Wibberley (National Treasure) are working on a draft -- a new script is in the actor’s hands.

Not that I needed to be anymore sold on this, but the addition of Pitt does add to my anticipation.
