Probably the best of the series for me, but the payoff at the end wasn't as good as I wanted.

i think the ending wasn't as memorable as the endings of the first two, but it was very tense anyway

I realize the film doesn't hinge on their conversations holding intellectual merit outside of the films, but it boils down to a few core issues I have with the films that won't disappear no matter how well I understand the intentions behind them.

They just aren't for me, it seems.

It's a great film, another memorable walk with Jesse and Celine. Hopefully, they will keep walking every ten years or so and I'll be there to see it.

Epic bump is epic.

Ethan Hawke Still Has Hope for Jesse and Celine’s Future, Teases A Fourth ‘Before’ Movie
It’s been four years since Jesse and Celine’s hotel fight in Greece broke our hearts, and anyone wondering what the couple at the center of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy is up to nowadays certainly isn’t alone. Is the couple still happily married? Or did that cataclysmic event uproot their entire love story? Linklater’s ambiguous ending to “Before Midnight” hinted at reconciliation, but it didn’t necessarily guarantee it.

Hawke recently sat down with The Independent to promote his new movie “Maudie,” in which he stars opposite Sally Hawkins, and the conversation couldn’t help but find its way to the “Before” trilogy, which the actor says is “connected to [his] soul, for lack of a better word.” Every nine years since “Before Sunrise” in 1995, Hawke has reunited with Linklater and co-star Julie Delpy to write and direct another installment.

So will Jesse and Celine be back in 2022? Hawke says he’s not sure, but he does have an idea of what to expect:

"I would have said after the second there was definitely going to be a third one but I do feel complete in that the first one starts with the older couple arguing on the train and by the end of the third one we’ve become that couple. If it were to continue it would change shape. It would be something else. Julie, Rick and I might work together again, we might revisit those characters but it’ll need a new burst of energy. I don’t know what it is. We’re not allowed to think about it until five years after – that’s how we’ve done it every time. “Waking Life” was five years after “Before Sunrise” and “Before Midnight” we met five years after “Before Sunset.” So we’re gonna meet five years after the release of “Before Midnight,” talk about it and see where we wind up."

Hawke’s answer may not be a definitive “yes,” but it’s certainly way more optimistic than a “no.” One of the reasons we may end up getting another “Before” movie is because Hawke just can’t seem to stop thinking about Jesse and Celine’s future. He admits the climactic fight in “Before Midnight” is tough to watch, but he views it as something that could actually be healthy for the relationship and not a nail in the coffin.

“People often think that because people are fighting something bad is happening, and often times, the opposite is true,” Hawke said. “If I look back at my own life and I see the most hurtful, scratchiest parts, those are the parts where the most growing had happened. At the end of ‘Before Midnight,’ I have a lot of hope for Jesse and Celine because at least they’re not living a lie; they’re engaged with each other. It’s a hard relationship, for sure, but I see a lot of love in that movie.”

Hawke continues: “At the end of that movie, I think he has more hope than Celine does…I think he’s clearly invested in that relationship and he’s clearly invested in loving that woman. Her problems are stronger and I think more developmental…I relate to it and I don’t see it without a lot of hope.”

In the years since “Before Midnight,” Hawke has gone on to appear in big budget movies such as “The Magnificent Seven” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” plus indie features like “Maggie’s Plan,” “Born to Be Blue,” and “In the Valley of Violence.” He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Linklater’s “Boyhood.” Despite all the eclectic roles he’s taken on, he still holds the “Before” trilogy closest to his heart.

“I’ve worked on Jesse at nine-year intervals [since 1995],” Hawke said. “I started working on that character when I was 25 and the last time when I was 41, so it’s been with me and I’ve gotten to put a lot of my own life into those movies.”

Did everyone here know the trilogy is a Criterion Collection? Ordered the Blu-ray collection for $44.00 New and I know for the moment at least that Barnes and Noble has their Criterion sale going on which is half off anything in the Criterion Collection.

Finally going to jump into this trilogy!

I think either one or both of them had said "is it?" when some reporter called Before Midnight last movie in the trilogy.

I didn't really want a third one cuz the first two were so good. And I don't really want a 4th cuz the first 3 are so good. They could prove me wrong, but even if they do, my OCD is very happy with a perfect trilogy.

Thanks for the criterion recommendation! I been looking to buy these for a while!
