The dynamic range of the sound is compressed. Usual on TV and called "night mode" on Blu-ray player. Less dramatic and flat.
Blu-ray will have the full dynamic range of sound, and more "wow" just like in the theatre.

AFAIK, lcd with VA type panel display are much better these days and more than adequate to be watched on dark environment. Even the contrast are better than older dlp projector. High end samsung could reach 5000:1. Meanwhile about half lcd or led tv on market are IPS type display with poor contrast ...
