Yes, you are respected and acknowledged to a certain extent. But death is like the biggest award/accolade out there to 'make yourself more than just a man'.
Look at Michael Jackson, I know a lot of people that wasn't a fan of his and suddenly started idolising him after his death.

IMO, it's a really rare case to find living legends.
Society usualy tends to accept people as legends once they are finally dead. How many influential living people today are getting hailed as much as those that have passed (lincoln, shakespeare etc.)?

Seems reasonable if the next movie is based on 'the dark knight returns' story arc.
Maybe see the batman come back after years and surprise those that had him dead.
