Because Nolan's approach to comic book movies is more interpretive rather than literal. You can't with with Watchmen , you either stay faithful and sacrifice artistic interpretation or do your own thing and severely piss off fans. Snyder stayed about as faithful as he could have and he still got at...

This is exactly the reason why Inception needs to rake in tons of cash - it can prove to all the studios that an original film can make a lot of money if it is good.
