Re: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

this is completely lovely. found the formalism slightly stifling, but its visually amazing and daring and the final 5 minutes transmogrify the whole thing into the sublime. its an ode to love and the creative spirit and how those may be one and the same. as far as formal "historical attitudes threa...

Re: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Cannot stop thinking about this. There’s a scene in the middle which involves singing and it blew me away. The ending, a nice little coda, is also insane. A truly powerful movie about the power of art/painting/cinema.

Ooh looking at the bottom right and noticed that it’s edited by Jennifer Lame, Nolan’s new editor.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

So there’s just no thread for this...?

This was the real deal. My #2 of the year so far, right after Parasite.

Re: Joker (2019)

Here's the thing: this is a superhero/comicbook movie that is a slow-paced, R-rated character study (no matter whether you think it is superficial or even good) without tons of CG explosions or even a happy ending...none of these things are what the general moviegoing public associates with comicbo...

Re: Joker (2019)

Brilliant brilliant film. What I didn't like: Too much reading. His rant at the end was a little too on the nose. Not sure how to explain it. But the subtleties of the rest of the film make up for it. Not to be nitpicky - as I agree that the end speech was quite on the nose - but what other parts o...

Re: Gemini Man (2019)

This breaks my heart, Lee has had a horrible decade. Hope he recovers from this.

Edit: I am aware he literally won the Oscar for BD *again* this decade, but Life of Pi is not that great imo.

Re: Ad Astra (2019)

I've been letting it marinate more and I have more annoyances with the movie despite really liking it. Like Liv Tyler's part. She's barely in the film but she was in all the advertising. Like why give such a small thankless role to such a big name? Same with Ruth Negga. I'm wondering if their parts...

Re: Ad Astra (2019)

Speaking of which, when does his soundtrack come out? I’d like to hear the track that plays during the lunar launch scene again. Soon-ish but might not even be the full thing. Richter and Balfe recorded two entirely separate scores - Gray cherrypicked from both for the final edit, with a heavy doll...
