A speculation on Reddit was that she becomes his mysterious benefactor to finance his investigations. Leaves room for a good cameo.

Gerwig did a terrific job with this. Great screenplay and direction as well as fantastic performances. Just a very enjoyable and sweet watch.
The structure paid off so well with the Beth on the beach sequence.

Chapter 8 was a terrific finale. Very excited for Season 2. Some pacing issues in the mid section but when this was working, it was fantastic.
