Re: HBO's Watchmen

Don't agree with everything here but it spells out a particular limit of Lindelof's vision in his Watchmen universe: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/dr- ... ntz-fanon/

Re: What Was the Last Episode of TV You Watched

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (miniseries): This is great and Guinness is terrific. What surprised me though was how, contrary to the 2011 film version, Ann's affair with Bill, and her other affairs were much more of an open secret - Smiley even admitted to it being used to get under his skin - and the ...

Re: Last Film You Watched? VI

The Farewell: Really good. Surprised to see it got no pushback for promoting values which are obviously antithetical to western ideas about freedom.

Re: Last Film You Watched? VI

Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood: On one hand, Rick Dalton is one of Tarantino's most endearing protagonists. On the other, Tarantino's vision of not only the '60s at large, but even of Hollywood during that period is too small, too facile, and makes you question why he even set the movie during tha...

Re: Marriage Story (2019)

So just saw this, and yeah the film takes Charlie's (Adam driver) side. Maybe not explicitly, but the manner in which Charlie processes the actions which Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) takes - not only to break free but to start building herself up - as a shock, as betrayal, is also meant to register w...

Re: The Irishman (2019)

This was incredible, and for me personally, a necessary corrective to Goodfellas. I have been kind of lukewarm on Scorsese in general but I think The Irishman caps off what I would consider his strongest decade - so far.
