Christopher Nolan’s Tenet Moves Back Two More Weeks to August 12, 2020

Tenet: Coming to Theaters July 17th, scratch that, July 31st, scratch that, August 12th

UPDATE 6/25/20: Warner Bros. has pushed Tenet to mid-August in lieu of rising COVID-19 cases nationwide. Tenet is now set to hit theaters on August 12, 2020.

Warner Bros. has decided to move Christopher Nolan’s Tenet  to July 31, 2020, according to a report by Deadline. Over the last several months, concerns over COVID-19 and public health have raised questions and spawned many many articles surrounding the film’s originally planned release date of July 17, 2020. The two week move may not have much impact on public health, but could be more of a strategic move to coordinate a full nationwide release. The new date might also take pressure off Nolan and Warner Bros. for releasing the first major film in theaters since shelter-in-place orders started going into effect in mid-March.

As it now stands, Disney‘s Mulan will be the first major release on July 24, 2020. And though Tenet is moving back two weeks, a Nolan film will still be in theaters mid-July! Inception will be made available to theaters instead as part of that film’s 10th anniversary. Audiences will also get a never-before-seen look at footage from Tenet, as well as an exclusive sneak peek of other select Warner Bros. films. So Inception will essentially be acting as a two week marketing campaign for Tenet. Pushing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet  to July 31, 2020 should also allow for major cities like New York City and San Fransisco to move into phases that allow for movie theaters to reopen, while still getting the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) to their goal July reopen dates.

NATO has been pushing full force to be up and running by July, with many regions even getting theaters to open over the next two weeks. However many of the major theater chains have somewhat concerning public health strategies. Cinemark isn’t requiring face coverings, and it is rumored that AMC might not require them either. With many states starting to see an increase of new cases (as a result of eased restrictions and large gatherings that started around Memorial Day) will theaters be safe for the public by the end of July? Does Tenet’s two week delay matter much? And would you feel comfortable seeing a movie next month? Discuss these questions and more over in our forums.

As of now, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet hits IMAX and theaters on July 31, 2020.
