A ShoWest Roundtable Interview w/ Christopher Nolan

Posted on Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 1:09 pm by TeddyBlass

chris nolan insomnia A ShoWest Roundtable Interview w/ Christopher NolanOur friends over at Collider got to participate in a round-table interview with Christopher Nolan this past weekend at ShoWest. On the table for discussion was Inception, shooting in IMAX, the recent 3D boom, and much more. Most interesting of all was when Chris talked about shooting select scenes on Inception with 65mm and even VistaVision as a substitute for shooting IMAX.

We shot key sequences on 65mm and we shot VistaVision on certain other sequences. So we’ve got a negative – a set of negative – that’s of the highest possible quality except IMAX. We didn’t feel that we were going to be able to shoot in IMAX because of the size of the cameras because this film given that it deals with a potentially surreal area, the nature of dreams and so forth, I wanted it to be as realistic as possible. Not be bound by the scale of those IMAX cameras, even though I love the format dearly. So we went to the next best thing which was 65mm. So we have the highest quality image of any film that’s being made and that allows us to reformat the film for any distribution form that we’d like to put it in. We’re definitely going to do an IMAX release. We’re excited about doing that and using our original negative 65mm photography to maximize the effect of that release.

Pretty interesting stuff, eh? Well there is a whole lot more over at Collider, so be sure to read the whole interview! Thanks to courtney in the forums for the tip!

Inception Footage Screened at ShoWest ’10

Posted on Thursday, March 18th, 2010 at 11:39 pm by TeddyBlass

nolan showest gettyimages Inception Footage Screened at ShoWest 10Every March, the Nielsen Film Group puts on an exhibition in Las Vegas for the National Association of Theatre Owners; this event is known as ShoWest. Some of the biggest movie studios in Hollywood attend the event every year, and this year (like most) Warner Bros was there. With Warner Bros. today was writer/director Christopher Nolan and his upcoming film Inception. According to reports, Chris was still very secretive about the plot details while presenting new footage from the film. The presentation amounted to being the length of an extended trailer or so, and it didn’t seem to give any more indication to what exactly Inception is about. In fact, some people claim to be more confused! However, El Guapo from Latino Review seems to have a better understanding of just what exactly Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is doing. “[He] leads a team of security people who go into people’s dreams to ‘guard their subconscious’”. Something he supposedly explains with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character to (Ken Watanabe’s character) Sato.

Journalists at the event claim the footage reveals that there is a lot of action and mind-warping effects shots. Fabulous location footage from Paris and Canada were also revealed, as well as Michael Caine’s and Marion Cotillard’s characters. Just in case you’re trying to keep your mind fresh for when Inception hits theaters on July 16th, we won’t reveal anymore here. But if you want to learn more about what was shown, you can read reports at Latino Review, ComingSoon and CinemaBlend.

Christopher Nolan Helping Reboot Superman Franchise

>>Update 2.20.10<<: According to DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson, this is nothing more than a rumor. Read more over at MTV.com.

According to Nikki Finke (who we all got familiar with yesterday) and her pal Mike Flemming, Warner Bros is looking to reboot it’s Superman franchise soon, and they turned to Christopher Nolan to oversee development. Nikki’s insiders say Nolan “has been asked to play a ‘godfather’ role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground” after the last film failed nearly 4 years ago. Of course, Superman isn’t the only superhero film Chris will be working on, apparently he has an idea for Batman 3. Nikki confirms her story yesterday on Deadline.com saying David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan are currently working on the script.

Deadline.com‘s insider says “It would definitely not be a followup to Superman Returns,”  and Christopher Nolan isn’t likely to direct. Bryan Singer isn’t out of the picture yet, either is Superman himself, Brandon Routh. The history of the Superman film franchise is a long and complicated one. The series has had it’s ups and downs, and is quite familiar with long stages of development that are often nothing but dead ends. Warner Bros is looking to clean up and bring focus to the comic book’s film franchise, and they’re hoping Christopher Nolan can do it. Hell, he did it exceedingly well for Batman.

To understand the history of it all, head over to Deadline.com to read Nikki and Mike’s excellent article explaining it all.

The Movie Preview Critic’s Inception Movie Preview Review

Posted on Saturday, January 30th, 2010 at 12:05 am by AlexHaas

The Movie Preview Critic has released his preview review for Christopher Nolan’s next film, Inception.

The eleven-minute video features insight into “The Carte Blanche” concept that we’ve mentioned on the Nolan Fans Podcast. Meaning, with Christopher Nolan’s huge box office success with The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. has basically let him do whatever the heck he wants with Inception. It really is great to see such a talented director given the amount of budgetary flexibility shown here. We’ve already seen what sort of awesomeness this type of creative freedom can accomplish. (See James Cameron, Avatar).

Be warned. There are a few minor spoilers in this video. Although, it’s nothing that you haven’t heard before if you’ve read other news stories or forum posts here at Nolan Fans. Most of the detailed descriptions in this video are pure speculation. Enjoy!

New Inception Trailer Coming for Christmas

Posted on Saturday, December 12th, 2009 at 1:13 am by TeddyBlass

inception clock New Inception Trailer Coming for ChristmasAccording to the Warner Bros. Exhibitor website, the second trailer for Inception will be attached to prints of Sherlock Holmes – which releases on Christmas Day. Thanks to some clever math skills (and by clever I mean simple – but nonetheless skills) from our forum members, we have concluded that the trailer will be approximately 1 minute and 22 seconds long. What does this mean? Well for one thing, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan want to people to be aware of this film, but they don’t want to give too much away. Anywhos, it looks like everybody is getting an extra present for Christmas. And this news is a nice present for those of you celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.
