Christopher Nolan: A Blockbuster Auteur

 Christopher Nolan: A Blockbuster Auteur

“I want to know the movie, and then as soon as I know it, I wished I didn’t.” That statement, articulated by Christopher Nolan in a recent interview with New York Times writer David Itzkoff, rings true for nearly anyone anticipating a film. And when something as original and mysterious as Nolan’s Inception is the center of that anticipation, the temptation to find out anything and everything about the project is only heightened. With just over two weeks until Inception hits theaters, the concern over whether or not audiences will take a dive into something perceived to be shrouded in secrecy has become the center of debate. “But it’s an unusual movie,” Nolan contends, “and so it’s a lot harder to just put out a two-and-a-half minute trailer and everyone goes, ‘Oh, yeah, I know what that is.’ An original concept – a world the audience hasn’t entered into before – for me as a filmgoer, that’s the most exciting thing.” Itzkoff calls Nolan “a blockbuster auteur,” a label all too appropriate in a climate where summer spectacles are re-written, re-shot, and re-titled to suit studio expectations. By trying to appeal to everyone, most recent releases are appealing to no one. Summer at the movies has never felt so bland.

Inception is Christopher Nolan’s third blockbuster. Although his previous effort, The Dark Knight, grossed over $1 billion worldwide, audiences had familiarity with the material and characters to drive anticipation. Inception has to rely mostly on Nolan’s good will from The Dark Knight, the appeal of Leonardo DiCaprio, and mind bending visuals to crank up excitement. The Hollywood Reporter’s BULLSEYE forecast shows it has high interest overall, but low traction with women. And Hollywood Elsewhere’s tracking information on the film is a bit worrisome, putting awareness only slightly above Angelina Jolie’s upcoming thriller Salt. But if audiences are hungry for something fresh, will tracking or even opening weekend grosses really tell the whole story? It was less than seven months ago that Avatar opened with a $77 million weekend and went on to gross nearly $750 million domestically. Inception is not expected to pull numbers that high, but word-of-mouth has clearly proven to be effective when audiences are given something special. And early word on Inception has been glowing.

First Inception Review From Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers

Posted on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 at 11:30 am by George

The New York Post is reporting that the new issue of Rolling Stone features the first review of Inception. Although the review by Peter Travers has yet to reach the magazine’s website, the New York Post provides an excerpt from the 3.5/4 star review:

The mind-blowing movie event of the summer arrives just in time to hold back the flow of Hollywood sputum that’s been sliming the multiplex. ‘Inception’…will be called many things, starting with James Bond Meets ‘The Matrix.’ You can feel the vibe of Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ in it, and Nolan’s own ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight.’ But ‘Inception’ glows with a blue-flame intensity all its own. Nolan creates a dream world that he wants us to fill with our own secrets. I can’t think of a better goal for any filmmaker. Of course, trusting the intelligence of the audience can cost Nolan at the box office. We’re so used to being treated like idiots. How to cope with a grand-scale epic, shot in six countries at a reported cost of $160 million, that turns your head around six ways from Sunday? Dive in and drive yourself crazy, that’s how.

For comparison purposes, Peter Travers gave Memento 4.5/5 stars, The Dark Knight and The Prestige 3.5/4, and Batman Begins and Insomnia 3/4. This is a great first review for Inception, although the box office concern feels genuine. Or perhaps he’s underestimating general audiences. Hopefully we’ll be able to read his full review within the next few days.

Inception Character Featurette Now Online

Posted on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 at 2:22 pm by George

It sounded more than a little unbelievable when reports came in last night that a new Inception TV spot was taking up an entire commercial break during a re-run of Last Comic Standing on NBC. Today, however, it appears early word was spot-on as the new Inception Character Featurette is now online over at MSN UK. The featurette is two minutes in length and features more new footage and dialog than anything we’ve seen since the third trailer was released in back May. But those avoiding spoilers shouldn’t be too concerned. The aptly titled “Character Featurette” is focused more on introducing the main characters of the film than revealing any new plot information. This featurette should prove to be very effective if it continues to air as an extended TV spot, providing more clarification for viewers than any number of the shorter TV spots could.

Posted on Friday, June 18th, 2010 at 5:11 pm by George

Viral Inception‘s official UK Facebook page just unleashed details for a country-wide briefcase hunt in England with 14 tickets to Inception’s world premiere in London up for grabs. Getting started for now just involves “liking” the UK Inception Facebook page. But keep an eye out for cryptic clues updated on Facebook over the next few weeks. The clues will help you find the “The Extractor,” who will be in Brighton, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham or London from July 1st to July 8th, respectively. The first person in each location to find “The Extractor” and state “my mind is the scene of the crime” will receive two tickets to the London premiere.

The Competition Prize:

  • One (1) pair of tickets to the Premiere;
  • Attendance at a Meet the Cast event for two (2) people;
  • One (1) night’s accommodation in a 3 star hotel in London of Warner Bros’ choosing for two (2) people sharing one (1) room; and
  • Return travel for two (2) people to London from the Winner’s place of residence.

There is no word yet if Warner Bros will do a similar competition in the United States or offer early fan screenings similar to what was done for The Dark Knight back in 2008. Fans following the viral marketing were treated to free tickets to one of twenty-four chosen IMAX theaters in the United States for an early screening of The Dark Knight. But if you are lucky enough to live near one of the Inception Briefcase Hunt Competition locations in England, full details for the game can be found here.

Empire Magazine Gets Nolan and Inception Fever

Posted on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 pm by TeddyBlass

Empire MagazineThe latest issue of Empire Magazine is laced with Christopher Nolan goodness – and that’s an understatement. On the cover is Leonardo DiCaprio via July 16th’s Inception, and on the inside are 3 fantastic features on Christopher Nolan and his films. The cover story is a feature on Inception, and with on-set access and an candid interview with Leonardo DiCaprio, the article attempts to solve the riddle of Nolan’s latest film. Another article included in the magazine is an exclusive interview with the writer-director that touches on Batman 3, Stanley Kubrick, 3D, and the much talked about next Superman film.

“[...] while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think I know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context. I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

Lastly, but not certainly not least-ly, this issue of Empire Magazine features (more a less) a profile on Christopher Nolan’s illustrious filmography. From Memento, all the way to The Dark Knight, Empire reflects on the fantastic -and still young- career of the filmmaker. The magazine even got Wally Pfister, Gary Oldman, Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams, and Jonathan Nolan to write about how Chris makes the magic happen. So head to your local bookstore today and find yourself a copy of Empire Magazine – you certainly won’t regret it!

Cillian Murphy Talks Inception and Batman 3

Posted on Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 at 9:59 pm by George

Cillian Murphy“He didn’t say, ‘Take whatever role you want,’” Murphy explained. “I wasn’t going to steal Leonardo DiCaprio’s part. But [Christopher Nolan] said, ‘I have an idea what you might be good for… Tell me what you think.’ And we both agreed. It’s different for me. It’s not like any character I’ve played before.”

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, Cillian Murphy revealed that he met with Christopher Nolan over a year ago and was given two hours to read Inception’s script and decide which characters he felt best suited for. The two agreed Murphy would be good for Fischer, a character “central to the narrative of the film” and the mark for the heist. “Chris has talked about it being an existential heist movie and if you take that, I would be a crucial cog in that heist set-up.”

While many have wondered what the on-set dynamic was like with such a complex script, Cillian assured Total Film that “there is never confusion on a Chris Nolan set. Just to be around him… he has complete confidence in his abilities without ever appearing arrogant. He’s just at ease, and he gives actors great confidence. To feel a director like Chris has faith in you is very liberating.”

The emotionality of the film that Geoff Boucher described in his Hero Complex article on was echoed by Murphy: “The film has a strong emotional core to it – Leo’s character and some of the other characters are trying to work emotional stuff out – but, having said that, it is a big exciting action film. It’s not all about people with their heads in their hands going, ‘Why did I leave that girl?’”

When asked about Batman 3 Murphy wasn’t able to bring details to light, but appeared willing to reprise his Scarecrow role if given the opportunity. “It’s not for me to start campaigning for the Scarecrow to come back but if Chris wants me back in that role, yeah, absolutely, I would love to do it…”

Murphy left Total Film with some encouraging words on what is sure to be something special. “In this age of 3D and phenomenal special effects, we tend to be a little inured to big movies, like, ‘Whatever…’ But Chris is really going to challenge that with Inception. I don’t doubt it.”
