Behind the Scenes: Creating the Sounds of Dreams

Posted on Monday, July 19th, 2010 at 7:29 pm by TeddyBlass

Ask any good filmmaker what the most important aspects of film are, and among the top answers you get, sound will undoubtedly be one of them. It’s vitally important to modern cinema, and it is one of the key factors in selling the audience on the world of the film they’re viewing. Luckily for director Christopher Nolan, Academy Award winning sound designer Richard King was part of his team working on Inception. The two had a successful last collaboration with The Dark Knight, in which King won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. King also won the same award in the past for his work on Master and Commander, and has won and been nominated for various other awards for his work on films like Signs, War of the Worlds, and Nolan’s own The Prestige.

The acclaimed sound-man and his team of mixers (Lora Hirschberg and Gary Rizzo) can been seen in a new featurette about Creating the Sounds of Dreams for Inception. In the video they explain the fascinating process of creating, editing, and mixing sounds for complex and rich world of the film. Check it out:

This particular video is of James Rocchi of MSN Movies talking with the stars and director of Inception about keeping it real in an unreal world. Check it out. Hopefully it holds you over until your next viewing of the film in theaters:
