Daniel Sunjata and Others Join The Dark Knight Rises

sunjata 2 Daniel Sunjata and Others Join The Dark Knight Rises

UPDATE: Variety is reporting that Diego Klattenhoff (Mean Girls, Men in Trees) and Burn Gorman (Torchwood, Layer Cake) will likely be joining the Dark Knight Rises team. According to the report, Klattenhoff has been offered the role of a rookie cop, and Gorman is being eyed for a supporting role in the film. The report also sheds more light on the Daniel Sunjata news, stating the actor is in early talks to play a special forces operative.

The Tracking Board (via /Film) is reporting that Daniel Sunjata has joined the already impressive cast of The Dark Knight Rises. It is unclear (surprise, surprise) what role he will be playing, but the TTB says it is ‘rumored’ that Sunjata will play an ‘important character’ to the story. Fans of the show Rescue Me will recognize the otherwise lesser known actor, but don’t let his unknown-ness throw you off. In 2003, Sunjata won a Theatre World Award for his Broadway performance as a gay Major League Baseball player — a role which also earned him a Tony nomination. He has since had a number of small and breakout roles in various television shows and films.

It looks, to me, like Christopher Nolan is starting to fill in the missing pieces to the Rises casting puzzle as the start date draws closer — just a few weeks now. It would be nice though to get a confirmation on Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, no?

Josh Pence Cast As Young Ra’s Al Ghul in TDKR

josh pence border Josh Pence Cast As Young Ras Al Ghul in TDKR

The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier today that Josh Pence has been cast “a young Ra’s al Ghul” in Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Josh Pence has yet to have a breakout role in a major film and an appearance in one of the most anticipated movies in recently history probably can’t hurt his carrer. He’s played in only a handful of films and has made a few TV appearances that include Parks and Recreation and CSI. You might not remember hearing about Pence playing Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network, but he certainly did. Armie Hammer’s face was superimposed on his to create an identical twin. Pence recently wrapped filming Universal’s Battleship which, like Rises, hits theaters in mid-2012.

“A young Ra’s al Ghul.” We all know what that means. It looks like Christopher Nolan’s super-secret script contains some flashback sequences.

Marion Cotillard’s role as Thalia al Ghul, a rumor from February, was never confirmed. I think this news increases the chances of that rumor actually being realized. If we’re talking about flashback sequences here, there’s a great chance that the script for The Dark Knight Rises revolves heavily around Ra’s Al Ghul and possibly his family. News broke earlier this week of Cotillard scheduling to take on a summer project this year.

The Dark Knight Rises starts its worldwide production that includes filming locations like Los Angeles, London, Pittsburgh, and various parts of Europe and Asia next month. Spill your opinions in the comments below.

collectors soundtrack Inception Collectors Edition Soundtrack Announced

Well it seems that someone over at WaterTower Music has heard our collective cries and decided to release a Collector’s Edition of Hans Zimmer’s score to Inception. Hardcore fans of the film have noticed the more than fair amount of score in the movie that is missing from the original soundtrack release. Well guys, this new release contains over 40 minutes of unreleased music and 3 brand new remixes produced by world renowned remixers. The 8-1/8″ by 8-3/4″ package also comes with a 42-page booklet with photos and stories by Hans Zimmer, Johnny Marr and Christopher Nolan, as well as a DVD with 5.1 audio and video interviews. Check out the tracklisting below. Warning: For those who haven’t seen the film yet (seriously, do you people actually exist?) there are mild-spoilers (if you’re smart enough to piece it together) in some of the track titles. So There Might Be Another Batman… It’s Kinda Confusing…

moar batman So There Might Be Another Batman... Its Kinda Confusing...

I won’t pretend to be thrilled about the news that has been making its way around the internet today. I’m not even sure I understand it. Let me break it down to the best of my ability. Jeff Robinov (President of Warner Bros.) recently gave an interview to Hero Complex about WB’s long-term strategy for their DC Comics properties. The interview included Mr. Robinov saying that a Justice League movie is in the works… as is another Batman movie after The Dark Knight Rises… sorta. The article mentions that Batman will be an important property that will continue after Christopher Nolan finishes his bit with it next year. But then Mr. Robinov states that Chris and Emma will stay on as producers. Yea… I don’t know what’s going on either.

Robinov knows that the most bankable part of his superhero empire has been Nolan and his Gotham City films –  the studio has yet to deliver a 21st century superhero blockbuster hit without Nolan in the director’s seat. Batman will continue to be a centerpiece property beyond next year’s The Dark Knight Rises and Nolan’s departure from the franchise. “We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”
- Hero Complex

It sounds to me like Warner Bros. has a gun to Nolan’s head, forcing him to help out their otherwise rocky superhero franchises. A reinvention of Batman sounds fairly straight forward to me; a reboot… of sorts. It’s unlikely that the movie will have any direct connections to Nolan’s three installments, but I suppose anything is possible. Whatever it ends up being, referring to it as Batman 4 seems ludicrous. Perhaps Chris and Emma will advise the re-imagining. Perhaps Robinov wants Chris to convince Christian Bale to stay on. My hope is that whatever is done with any future Batman films is done by not trying to mimic Christopher Nolan’s work. Sorry for all of the ellipses.

The 2011 Academy Awards Round-Up

inception oscars The 2011 Academy Awards Round Up

I’m sure by now you all are familiar with the results of the 2011 Academy Awards. And you’re probably quite aware that Inception took home 4 Oscars this past Sunday night. It’s not breaking news, or news even, but we have to talk about it right? So we’ll try to make it interesting by including video clips and opinions. Let us remind you that Inception was nominated for a total of 8 Academy Awards. Quite famously none of those 8 were for Best Director. Here is what the nominations were for: Art Direction, Cinematography, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Original Screenplay, and Best Picture. And here’s the breakdown of the half of those it did win.

First up, Best Achievement in Cinematography. Inception had just lost the first award of the night, Achievement in Art Direction, to Alice in Wonderland. Not the best sign for Inception‘s night it would seem. I personally thought it had a more than fair shot at winning in that category, but I’m often wrong about these things. Cinematographer Wally Pfister had some tough competition, among them the great Roger Deakins who has been nominated a total of 8 previous times without a win. But sure enough the prized golden statue went to 4 time nominee Wally Pfister! You can check out video of his acceptance speech later on in the article.
