David S. Goyer Addresses Batman 3 Rumors

Posted on Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 8:31 pm by TeddyBlass

After Gary Oldman’s quote last week, many people have been eager to learn more about the rumored The Dark Knight follow-up, aka Batman 3. MTV News wasted no opportunities and decided to ask Batman Begins co-writer David S. Goyer to reveal what he could. Quick to throw water on the fire that Gary Oldman ignited at the San Diego Comic-Con, Goyer responded by saying:”Right now, Chris is involved in filming Inception, and when he finishes that, he will turn his studious gaze back to the Bat universe and we’ll see.”Goyer was a little reluctant to answer, and it seems he saw the question coming from a mile away. Was he just giving us a canned answer to cover up a possible slip by Oldman? or was he being forthright?

Batman 3 Coming in 2011, says Gary Oldman – UPDATED

Posted on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 8:02 pm by AlexHaas

At the San Diego Comic-Con 2009, Gary Oldman was starring on a panel for one of his upcoming movies when he was asked about Batman 3. He replied saying,

I think the next Batman is next year. We start shooting next year for a release in two years. You didn’t hear that from me.

This is sure a strange way to hear of any semi-official news regarding a third Batman film.UPDATE: (video) Gary Oldman interview that took place outside of The Book of Eli panel room.

Batman 3 To Be Nolan Free? Doubtful.

Posted on Thursday, June 25th, 2009 at 2:23 am by AlexHaas

Some websites are reporting that Christopher Nolan might not be directing a third Batman film after Inception. Other websites are implying that Batman 3 could be directed by someone else, although, Christian Bale is contractually obligated to reprise his role as Batman.I’m here to say that I really doubt that a third, non-Nolan, Batman film with Christian Bale as Batman would happen. First off, as Erik on the forums mentioned, “[The article states] they knew this for a year, and they publish it now?” What can they gain in withholding that kind of information? If this looked like this was serious possibility, we would’ve know this by now for sure. Christopher Nolan would’ve let everyone know that he’s done with the Batman films and production of a third film would be able to start production under another director. But Chris Nolan isn’t doing that. This is all clearly speculation and there is nothing to worry about.Discuss in the comments.

Top Ten Reasons to Make Batman 3 and Why Chris Nolan Needs To Direct It

Posted on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at 2:08 am by AlexHaas

The Dark KnightInception news has been incredibly quite for about a full month now and we’ve been struggling to keep to entertained until its production starts. (Which should be in about another month.)

Anyways, this isn’t exactly “new” news, but Teddy and I found it very interesting. This is RopeofSilicon.com’s “Top Ten Reasons to Make Batman 3 and Why Chris Nolan Needs To Direct It.”

10. Because to not do it would cause a global riot (except in Japan where they hated it)

Outside of Japanese audiences not taking to The Dark Knight the rest of the world couldn’t get enough and to deny such a large group of people the chance to see the caped crusader on the big screen yet again would not lead to a group of happy fans.

The Dark Knight

9. To shut up all the people who think Rachel Dawes is alive and is Catwoman

Argh, this is something that bothers me to no end, as well as does the “Two-Face is alive” argument. Fans of Chris Nolan’s Batman series love the films for their realistic approach to the storylines and yet still believe there is a chance Nolan would lower himself to the point of such a simple plot twist as, “You thought he was dead, but he really wasn’t” and use it as a cliffhanger…

The Dark Knight

8. Because Nolan’s Batman trilogy has the potential to become the first truly great comic book trilogy

There has yet to be a superhero to be featured in three consecutive great films. Superman had Superman and Superman II. X-Men had X-Men and X2. While I am not a fan of the Spider-Man films I know fans love the first two films in that franchise. Blade did well for two films until he lost his audience. Just imagine buying Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy and actually wanting every film in it.

The Dark Knight

7. New Batmobile, Wayne Manor and Batcave

The Batmobile was destroyed so either Batman needs to just continue rolling around in his open-air Bat-pod or something new needs to be created. I remember when I first saw the Tumbler and thought how ridiculous it looked, then I saw it in action and couldn’t have been more impressed. On top of that we will get to see the rebirth of Wayne Manor and Bruce Wayne’s new Batcave.

The Dark Knight

6. The chance to finally explore Arkham Asylum

Arkham has been mentioned in both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but we haven’t really gotten a good glimpse at its inner-workings, an oversight that could be remedied in a third film.

The Dark Knight

5. Because we need to end all the villain rumors

I don’t know about you, but hearing the endless barrage of “Johnny Depp should play ___________” in every upcoming movie is getting so old. I can’t imagine Chris Nolan turning to a name the size of Depp as his next villain and the amount of speculation surrounding his involvement I would say has pretty much killed any chance of him being cast, and the same goes for Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The Dark Knight

4. Because you don’t end a franchise with your hero as the villain who the public now hates.

The end of The Dark Knight had Batman driving off into the blackness, characterized as the villain as Commissioner Gordon took an axe to the Bat-signal. Sorry folks, you just don’t end your franchise with your hero as the villain with the city he has saved hating him. That is unless you truly were going for the darkest superhero tale of all-time and never planned on offering your hero a chance for redemption. If that is the case, good on yah.

The Dark Knight

3. Because opening the film with Batman as the perceived villain is just too tasty to ignore

Continuing the idea of Batman as the villain, as much as you can’t end the franchise with him painted as the baddie it is just too good a conceit to leave it up to our imagination. How does he regain the trust of Gotham? What must Batman do to once again become the city’s savior and have them love him for it? It seems like such an impossible task, but I can’t imagine they didn’t think about digging the hole without knowing how they were going to fill it back up.

The Dark Knight

2. Because you can’t abandon such a unique and realistic comic book superhero

Chris Nolan’s Batman franchise is the most realistic approach to a superhero franchise I can think of, at least in terms of one where the hero dresses up in a suit and wears a mask. For all intents and purposes, should someone have enough money and the motivation there is no reason why someone couldn’t come damn close to becoming a real life Batman. The idea is crazy to think of, but it isn’t far from the truth.

The Dark Knight

1. Because if Chris Nolan doesn’t do it Brett Ratner will

Coming up with the #1 reason was quite simple. We all know Batman 3 is going to get made and we assume it will be made by Chris Nolan with his writing team including his brother Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer. However, if that didn’t turn out to be the case who would Warner Bros. turn to? Fox turned to Brett Ratner for X-Men 3. Ironically enough New Line turned to David Goyer for Blade: Trinity. Warner Bros. previously turned over their first Batman franchise from the hands of Tim Burton to Joel Schumacher and super-nipples were born. While I realize there are certainly other directors that could carry the Batman mantle into the future I can’t think of any reason why Warner Bros. would want them to. In my book we need Chris Nolan to direct the third Batman film just to ensure someone like Brett Ratner does not.

So there you have it. What do you think? Have you got anymore reasons why it should be made? I’m sure you do. Weigh in below.

Christian Bale’s Thoughts on Batman 3

Posted on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 at 5:22 am by AlexHaas

In a recent talk with TotalFilm, Christian Bale suggested that he wants to break the trend of third movies not living up to expectations.

“Will we do a third movie? It’s got to be the right story. You can’t make something like The Dark Knight and then come out with something disappointing. I would like it if people say, ‘You’ll never make a good third movie.’ I say, ‘OK, let’s make a third movie in that case, let’s prove them wrong. But that’s just me. The fact is, I have to! I’ve signed up! Chris doesn’t. So I’m in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn’t want to!”

With The Dark Knight hitting $1 billion in worldwide box-office sales, making a third film better is going to be a huge challenge. Tell us your thoughts on Bale’s thoughts in the comments below. [via TotalFilm, Filmonic, forum member: dagn96]

“Inception” Delayed, “Batman Redemption” Announced

Posted on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 at 5:16 am by AlexHaas

[April Fools] You read it correctly. Batman fans are getting their wish. Earlier today, Syncopy Films announced that Christopher Nolan will shift his attention from the Inception project to focus on the release of a third Batman film, entitled “Batman Redemption.” This decision came after Leonardo DiCaprio, who was set to star in Inception, wanted to push shooting on the film back a number of months so that he may shoot an unspecified passion project. Warner Bros insisted that Nolan push up the schedule on Batman 3 in return. David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan already had a story outline complete and had handed it off to younger brother Jonathan Nolan, co-writer of The Dark Knight, some months ago to do a couple drafts.

Commenting on the script, the 38 year-old director said, “I have no doubt that a story like this has the potential to top The Dark Knight, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it.” When asked about fan concern about rushing the film, Nolan commented, “[Batman Redemption] is going to have the exact same timeline which we had for The Dark Knight after Batman Begins in 2005. We’re not rushing anything, we’re just not delaying anymore, that’s all.” Batman Redemption will hit theaters Summer 2011.
