The Directors Guild of America has published their interview with Christopher Nolan for their spring DGA Quarterly. The in-depth interview covers Nolan’s preference of film over digital, his thoughts on 3D, why he believes in IMAX, as well as other details of his processes while working on a film. It’s nothing less than fascinating, and full of detail and insight into the traditionalist filmmaker’s methods. For example:

DGA: You and your cameraman, Wally Pfister, are—along with Steven Spielberg—among the last holdouts who shoot on film in an industry that’s moved to digital. What’s your attraction to the older medium?

Nolan: For the last 10 years, I’ve felt increasing pressure to stop shooting film and start shooting video, but I’ve never understood why. It’s cheaper to work on film, it’s far better looking, it’s the technology that’s been known and understood for a hundred years, and it’s extremely reliable. I think, truthfully, it boils down to the economic interest of manufacturers and [a production] industry that makes more money through change rather than through maintaining the status quo. We save a lot of money shooting on film and projecting film and not doing digital intermediates. In fact, I’ve never done a digital intermediate. Photochemically, you can time film with a good timer in three or four passes, which takes about 12 to 14 hours as opposed to seven or eight weeks in a DI suite. That’s the way everyone was doing it 10 years ago, and I’ve just carried on making films in the way that works best and waiting until there’s a good reason to change. But I haven’t seen that reason yet.

The Dark Knight Rises 3D

What’s the opposite of an exclamation mark? According to a recent Press Release from Warner Bros., The Dark Knight Rises is being post-converted to 3D. Stereo D, the company James Cameron used to post-convert Titanic, is in charge of the stereoscopic conversion process. The good news for non-3D fans is that Nolan plans on keeping the IMAX showings 2D, and will only be adding RealD and Dolby 3D screenings as additional theaters.

BURBANK, CA— Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that “The Dark Knight Rises” will be released to RealD® and Dolby® 3D theatres simultaneously with the film’s wide release in conventional and IMAX® theatres on July 20, 2012. The epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is being post-converted by Burbank’s Stereo D LLC., the same company in charge of converting “Titanic” for James Cameron. “Chris Nolan’s groundbreaking vision makes his films ideally suited for the immersive capabilities that 3D has to offer,” said David Fueller, Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of domestic distribution.

The filmmaker shot large portions of the film with traditional 2D IMAX® cameras, and plans on keeping the IMAX® screenings true to that format. However, the Academy Award® nominated filmmaker is looking to expand upon the film’s much anticipated release. “As the number of 3D screens around the globe continues to grow, we’re thrilled to offer film’s like ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in richer experiences for the moviegoers,” said Victoria Gelfond-White, President, Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures International.

Christopher Nolan stated, “Our experience in working with the talented artists at Stereo D was awe inspiring. We did various brightness and depth tests, and when we saw how the tests were developing, we were very impressed!” Nolan and his cinematographer, Wally Pfister, have been secretly meeting with the stereoscopic effects company since November of last year. The conversion will cost approximently $10-20 million and will not delay the film’s release.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Chris Nolan, Emma Thomas and Warner Bros. Pictures to deliver one of the year’s biggest films in three dimensions,” added Lirpa Sloof, Chairman and President of Stereo D. “Chris has proven to be an immensely talented director. He has the vision and skills to make an immersive blockbuster film that is truly larger than life. We’re excited to be a key ingredient in what will surely be the biggest film this side of April Fools.”

So somehow in the last six months, Christopher Nolan and Oscar-winner Wally Pfister have been secretly starting the 3D conversion process. Perhaps they were pressured from the studio. We heard rumors about an Inception 3D release on and off for the past two years.

A ShoWest Roundtable Interview w/ Christopher Nolan

Chris Nolan on Insomnia SetOur friends over at Collider got to participate in a round-table interview with Christopher Nolan this past weekend at ShoWest. On the table for discussion was Inception, shooting in IMAX, the recent 3D boom, and much more. Most interesting of all was when Chris talked about shooting select scenes on Inception with 65mm and even VistaVision as a substitute for shooting IMAX.

We shot key sequences on 65mm and we shot VistaVision on certain other sequences. So we’ve got a negative – a set of negative – that’s of the highest possible quality except IMAX. We didn’t feel that we were going to be able to shoot in IMAX because of the size of the cameras because this film given that it deals with a potentially surreal area, the nature of dreams and so forth, I wanted it to be as realistic as possible. Not be bound by the scale of those IMAX cameras, even though I love the format dearly. So we went to the next best thing which was 65mm. So we have the highest quality image of any film that’s being made and that allows us to reformat the film for any distribution form that we’d like to put it in. We’re definitely going to do an IMAX release. We’re excited about doing that and using our original negative 65mm photography to maximize the effect of that release.
