Are horror films too tied to their formula? As in, it's a horror because of XYZ

It's tough to come up with something refreshing yet also good if not great and still be a horror film.

Horrors don't have to be scary to be good. Some of the best horrors aren't that scary anymore or never have. They deal with interesting themes in a unique way... or they're just fun entertainment. You have The Shining and Friday the13th. Neither is really scary but they're good movies. Horrors are not just about being scary. If they are that's great but rarely do I find one that actually is.

Disturbing yes. Scary? No way.

Scary was Blair Witch when it came out. Conjuring, Ring, Alien, The Omen, Rec... these are scary.

The Shining is in the same group with movies like Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Rosemary's Baby etc.

I'm with RIFA. It's definitely not scary. It doesn't take anything away from being great. It's just not scary.

And I have to agree with the first BWP and The Ring. When they came out they were super scary.

Although the concept of scary is the same as funny - it's impossible to get a consensus on it. Unfortunately unlike comedy, which can be funny all the time, horrors usually only scare you once. And also old horrors do age and are not scary to the younger generation.

I don't think scary is one of the criteria for horrors. Thrillers are imo, or at least the very least suspenseful. I'd say one of horrors' criteria is for it to make you feel uncomfortable, jarring, things like that. Gross too, but I'd put that with torture porn horrors instead of just horrors.

For example, a moment in Game of Thrones. Scene of Ramsay and his girlfriend running after one of Ramsay's other girlfriends. They basically hunt her in the woods with the hounds. Ramsay orders his hounds to shred her to pieces once they've captured her. We don't see that happening but we hear it. This scene, imo, is one of the most unsettling of Game of Thrones. I'd call that horror.

this is like arguing over whether a movie is objectively funny

Lebron James In Talks to Produce ‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot
Having already attached himself to produce the hotly anticipated sequel to Space Jam, the active NBA superstar-turned-producer is heading to Camp Crystal Lake.

Bloody Disgusting is exclusively hearing that James and his Springhill Entertainment is currently in talks with Vertigo Entertainment to produce a reboot of Friday the 13th.

After Halloween’s mega $70M+ opening this past weekend, a new Friday the 13th is a no-brainer, especially when you consider James’ popularity combined with the massive horror experience of Vertigo, who was behind last year’s Stephen King adaptation of IT, as well as The Ring, The Strangers, and The Grudge.

This is a match made in heaven. James is said to be a huge horror fan and, if you recall, James slayed last year’s Halloween with his legendary Pennywise costume and even released Friday the 13th-themed sneakers. (There was also that one time he rocked a Jason Voorhees mask while driving.)

This news comes on the heels of original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller prevailing out of a lengthy legal battle in which U.S. District Court Judge Stefan Underhill granted summary judgment in favor of Miller and against the producers, Horror, Inc. While the latter is appealing, Miller currently has the U.S. rights to Friday the 13th, which include the locations and characters within the story.
