Religion: A Brainwashing Tool - Religious Discussions

I'm not sure if you're trolling or if you're just dense. Here's what I said:
Becoming an atheist or agnostic (I'm the latter) doesn't make you any more intelligent, you've just become less ignorant.

Then I mentioned how, by nature, we're ignorant, and provided the definition of the fucking word.
Yeah, real full-force attack on people of faith, there. Really patronizing.

Quit cornering the situation.

Becoming an atheist or agnostic means you become less ignorant.

This translates to "Theists and gnostics are more ignorant"... which also translates to theists being more ignorant than you are... which also translates into "Hello people! Mr. Superiority here cuz I'm an atheist"..

Which leads to you avoiding my points and the issues I have with not only how you used that word, but also with your whole perception of theists and gnostics.

Grow up and stop answering because you can't admit the bullshit you just wrote.

In your broken brain it may translate to "Mr Superiority cuz I'm an agnostic", but that's not what I was saying, and I've repeated this adfuckingnauseum. I used to be a Christian, and once I read more of The Bible, it's history, the problem of evil in the World and how that related to my beliefs, and how much of a tribal war deity the OT god is...I stopped believing. I became less ignorant of the World around me.

You seem to insist on fighting about this and getting offended on behalf of your religious friends. I've said, numerous damned times that I understand why people want to believe and they're at liberty to do so. Get the fuck out of here with this white knight bullshit.

..not that this is meant to be a personal attack, tho. It's cool bro.

I love how you didn't mention all the times I posted about people's intolerance towards my views in real life (family, family friends, and priests. Yes a priest confronted me about my heresy). I think that would offer a more concrete answer as to why I attack religion as opposed to calling me pompous by imputing a motive that has no reason to be accused.

As for the ongoing conflict in this thread I'm only going to contribute to it once. Theists are wish thinkers. Believers believe it because they want it to be true not because they think the numbers add up that it is true. If someone thinks that their religion's revelation is more plausible than it being a fabrication then I wouldn't hesitate to call the believer ignorant because he or she has little to no critical thinking skills.

This whole discussion reeks of internet hipper-than-thou bullshit. "Huh, disbelief and skepticism's getting too mainstream on the internet... I better become a half-assed christian apologist". It's just contrarianism without caring about what the truth of the matter is.

um huh?

Rifa is right you're throwing the word ignorant around too lightly. Religion is on the basis of what one believes to be true, in a higher power and you chose to not believe in that. How does that make you less ignorant? It really just makes you the same as everyone else you still choose to believe in what you consider to be the truth just like any religious person.

To each his own. Much more simpler if people just accepted other's faith and not argue why one is much logical or how the other is wrong. Ultimately religion is such a complex topic and brings different meaning to every individual.

Once again (I think I've said this a couple times now):

1.) I've already said they're at liberty to believe what they want. I'm a former believer, and I understand why people want to believe--the Universe is a lonely place, and having a creator/father figure who cares about you is very comforting.
2.) Religion isn't just "belief in a higher power", it's a social construct that has very specific dogmas and specific ideas about the nature of God and the Universe--none of them have evidence for any of them. It's one thing to believe in a creator, it's an entirely other thing to say that that creator gives a shit about what you eat, what you think, etc. These sort of ideas have tortured the minds of children and adults for centuries.
3.) You become less ignorant when you learn the specifics of your religion and realize that all of it is backed up by absolutely nothing, and you just have to believe it anyway (aka "take it on faith").

I've already explained that everyone is ignorant about something (or most things) really. When I started questioning, I realized I was ignorant of a lot of these facts about my beliefs and how they related to reality. And Agnosticism/Atheism isn't a belief, it's a lack of a belief on a specific subject.

Shit's sake, guys. I've made this clear multiple fucking times.

Yeah. You did it again... I have the feeling you're actually intelligently baiting. I'm done.

I shouldn't care anymore since I'm not religious but I have a lot of religious friends and I studied it for a long time to throw words around that are irrelevant.

For a non-religious person, you certainly seem to get offended at someone criticizing the World religions. Frankly, I don't give a damn what you find offensive, and this entire discussion makes you look like you're white knighting for political correctness, to the point that you think your anecdotes about your religious friends reflects the majority of religious dogma.

Disagreeing with the beliefs and thinking they're false, but still respecting the person's right to practice them and understanding why they choose to believe, is the highest respect you can show religions when you're a non-believer, especially considering all the damage they've caused and continue to cause--oh, sorry, am I allowed to say that?

Piss off.
