been playing some UT3 recently which reminded me how I still don't get what the Halo franchise has that the UT series doesn't have in TONS and TONS and then some


xcept maybe an interesting campaign and story I just really don't get what makes people FLOCK onto the multiplayer so much


I understand it being a successful franchise, I don't understand it having a cult following regarding the multiplayer because it's not in any way as outstanding as wonderful hardcore classic games that are now practically dead for the simple reason that there's no servers running em

i mean look at the warfare mode on UT2k4 or UT3 for example

people would say true twitch shooters are dead because there's no interest them anymore but that's wrong, there's tons of people that still love them, tons... the industry just assumed that they should stop producing them for some unknown reason

So many UT fans are dying for either a new UT game or even, hell, UT2k4 or 3 to just have servers and yet noone seems to think it would be a good idea to bring them back

and it's not just the qualities of the UT franchise, the creator kit was one of the best parts of the game which, even though dead for years now, still has an active modbase... 5 years after it died... what does that tell you?

prince, one simple answer to ease your ''pain'': It is XBOX exclusive. XBOX owners got to have THEIR game and it's Halo.

Halo is honestly the only reason I own an Xbox. Halo is the real deal.

Same here. Sold my PS3 two times and I like to play on my PC from time to time. Still, if I exclude Half-Life 2, KOTOR, Morrowind and those classic games... HALO 3 was The Game for me in terms of scope, emotion and simply epic SciFi. And I like the idea of being able to play differently every time, true sandbox. Once I was playing on Heroic (enemies know what to, mind you) and decided to shoot-n-run through one helluva difficult area, perfected it until my level time was ten times shorter, it's addictive like that.

People still play Halo 2 online. Even after Microsoft cut xbox live support for the game there is a very devout following of people who play it online through unofficial methods (xbconnect). Halo far exceeds the UT franchise; no ifs, ands, or buts.

with what does it exceed it? the enormous player base?

UT2k4 was better than Halo 2 when both were the shit and that doesn't seem to have changed at all, even during the UT3 time

with UT you've always had more weapons, more vehicles, more maps, more game mods, mutators, downloadable game mods, downloadable maps, a game editor, more flexibility, incredibly fast pace of gameplay (similar to quake, more so in UT2004 than in UT3) + more dodging + shooting's almost entirely in perspective ( -> more skill based ), no camping possible (ever), UT3 had better graphics than Halo 3 (which reminds me of the UT engine that a lot of games have been using since 2007 and is no lesser in epicness and functionality than the legendary source engine...)

I could literally spend days and just mod my game, download huge map packs, ending up with 200 maps at one point, totally separate and completely gamechanging mods that function more or less on their own and have fun with that.

I don't know how you can really argue with this. UT games have always been more feature heavy, in numbers and amount and quality. UT just pushed things to the limits.


I can agree with m4st4 tho for saying that xbox needs it's thing.

Besides the expansive universe, extremely devout fan base, and addictive gameplay, I'd argue that the thing that separates Halo from many other shooters is the accessibility among all its features. UT is a great franchise and I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing UT3 on Xbox when I owned it. While perhaps Halo (the console version at least) does not have the extreme intricacy and scope in some of its features (such as a modding) that UT has, there is something special and unique in that it allows pretty much any casual gamer the ability to use all of the game's features with ease. There aren't many other games that allow me to grab 3 of my buddies who have never picked up a game, sync up 4 controllers to the xbox, turn on Halo and still have a great time using EVERY feature of the game. While other games may allow an inexperienced person to have fun playing multiplayer and campaign, there aren't many other games that allow a casual gamer to so easily singlehandedly (or even cooperatively) edit maps at will and have so much fun while doing it. Every feature from campaign, Co-op, multiplayer, custom games, theater, file sharing, to forge is slick, functional, and easily operable. The accessibility of Halo has resulted with some of the best social gaming memories of my childhood.

Exactly because of these things you say it's always seemed to me that Halo's always been something like COD in terms of the casual-factor. Also because of when I usually ask the question 'what's so special about it' people refer to the campaign a lot which i would count as something entirely separate, not that I wouldn't wish UT had a campaign with a great story and universe (although for a game without real story or universe every single UT game has managed to look very consistant and to have an intriguing attention to the little specific detail it has across maps). Other than that they say it like you, it being special because of how it makes you feel. I know it has a certain package of possibilities and it looks pretty appealing and still there's an enormous amount of people that are more or less ignorrant of how unimpressive most of Halo looks considering how used almost every PC guy is to things like what Halo has to offer feature-wise.
