How about... no. They are ridiculously hyped even though their careers are weak.

I never see Edward Zwick's films get a lot of attention, besides The Last Samurai.

Who do you think are the 5 most overrated film directors

Okay...

Edward Zwick - His movies are mostly self-indulgent and scream for attention. His overall production is weak but people praise him for only two movies which are still flawed. It's like he's begging for Oscars even though he knows he cheats the filmmaking process by covering generic writing with over-the-top direction. His movies tend to not be overrated by the critics and cinephiles but he's terribly overrated by his fanboys and some of the regular moviegoers who fall to his cheap tricks.

I'm just gonna post here the general consensus... not even my ratings...

IMDB Overall Rating: 7.0
RT AC Overall Rating: 6.1
RT TC OVerall Rating: 6.1

Looks to me that his only really good movies are Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai. Given the fact that he has directed 10 movies... being praised the way he is by a large number of people just because of 2 movies which are far from being masterpieces in any way is a bit much. Therefore he deserves to be named in my list of overrated directors.

Wes Anderson - This guy is the definition of overrated. Notice that Wes Anderson's diversity is close to zero. This dude approached all his movies the same way. He has no idea what to do other than a satirical and cartoonish approach of comedy. If you can describe him in two words those would be obnoxious and repetative. Yes, he is entertaining and his movies have heart. But that's not enough to praise him like he's one of the best directors ever. Just like Burton... Wes Anderson lives in his own world. The difference between him and Burton though is in approach and variety.

Bottle Rocket (1996) - Comedy/Crime
IMDB: 7.1
RT AC: 6.6
RT TC: 6.1

Rushmore (1998) - Comedy/Drama
IMDB: 7.7
RT AC: 7.8
RT TC: 7.4

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) - Comedy/Drama
IMDB: 7.6
RT AC: 7.2
RT TC: 6.7

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) - Adventure/Comedy
IMDB: 7.6
RT AC: 6.0
RT TC: 5.7

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - Comedy/Drama
IMDB: 7.1
RT AC: 6.5
RT TC: 6.1

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) - Animation
IMDB: 7.8
RT AC: 7.9
RT TC: 8.3

IMDB Overall Rating: 7.4
RT AC Overall Rating: 7.0
RT TC OVerall Rating: 6.7

Notice the differences between IMDB community and RT community. One understands better what filmmaking is all about. Not saying one doesn't have faults but the differences are obvious imo.

The most overrated: Alexander Payne

Overrated: Steve McQueen, Cameron Crowe, Stephen Daldry, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Clint Eastwood (as a director), Rian Johnson (by the internet)

Very good, but not amazing: Ben Affleck, Jason Reitman, Wes Anderson (making the same old), Steven Soderbergh (more mediocre movies than great), Sam Raimi (see Soderbergh), Baz Luhrmann (All flash, no subtly), Ridley Scott (so many bad/mediocre movies to his name)

Would agree with Mcqueen and Eastwood being overrated.

But also three of the best films of all time (Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator) and some great ones as well (Kingdom of Heaven, Thelma and Louise, Matchstick Man) so I wouldn't call him overrated at all.

I don't think he's overrated at all, and because of his "reign of poor films", as some would put it, I think he's often underrated. Just take a look at how he redefined genres, and what he brought to the table with films such as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and even Kingdom of Heaven DC. Some would probably call me bias in this case, though. I can't really argue that.

Ridley Scott isn't overrated. He is one of the most influential directors of our time and he is one of the very best in innovation of amazing visual effects. He has made more consistently good films than many people give him credit for.

Best of all time I would say Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, AND Kingdom Of Heaven (DC), and I think you can be damn sure Prometheus will be the 5th.

And Great ones... Thelma and Louis, Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men, American Gangster

That's 8 solid films, a few of which are SUPER GOOD. Besides that, he has some stuff that is good but not amazing like Body of lies, Hannibal, The Duellists.

Besides that, he has had a few very low moments, but it's not too numerous. Ridley experiments. He is famous for Sci Fi and Gladiator, but the man has done Historical epics, modern War movies, weird drama's like Matchstick Men, crime drama's like American Gangster... etc. I think just for making very successful and great movies in all those genres he deserves gets a lot of credit for being able to experiment. He has had some pretty bad experiments like White Squall and the go awful GI Jane, but he has had more successes than failures.
