Two of his films are no.1 and no.2 in all time most successful.. both weren't great.. Personally thought Avatar was really bad. But even if you somehow like these films, you can't say the dude isn't more overrated than any other director in the world nowadays. For mediocre films to do so well..

Yeah but I think he's done things to earn his high position in the world. His story writing is flawed, most specifically his character writing, but he is a huge innovator in film making. I mean his trips to the bottom of the ocean recently, going 7 miles deep into the ocean floor just to take pictures of the bottom of the ocean and it' all for Avatar 2. That's dedication, IMO. I think regardless of his story writing his technical brilliance is undeniable. Whether you like his movies or not, every time he makes a new film it's some new giant step in film making, technically speaking at least.

For that reason I think he has earned his position more than many others.

This thread isn't about WORST director. It's about overrated. Cameron isn't THAT bad, he's not Bay, or Uwe Boll  but while he used to make classics, both Titanic and Avatar were mediocre but put him safely at the top of the highest grossing director ever. Nowadays, he's overrated, he's not as good as before and yet still gets praise and grosses like he's the best director around.

Let me clarify, I can agree Cameron is overrated, and that his later films fall behind his older classics (However I'm not sure I would agree with Titanic being "Mediocre") but I just don't see how he can be more overrated than say Spielberg. Spielberg's name is as big as Cameron's, probably bigger, despite box offices, but Spielberg hasn't done anything groundbreaking in a long time.

Well, I agree Spielberg is overrated too nowadays. But I do prefer his recent stuff to Cameron's. And I looked at this more from box office pov anyway.

Spielberg hasn't done anything groundbreaking in a long time? A.I. and Tintin alone break plenty of new ground.

Everyone besides Edward Zwick, Wes Anderson, Zack Snyder and David Cronenberg is correct.
