For my own opinion I'd have to say James Cameron is my number 1.

I would agree with you about Cameron if it wasn't for his recent 10 hour trips 7miles deep into the ocean by himself. Also that he is going to shoot Avatar 2 in a frame rate greater than 24fps. I agree he isn't the best story writer, especially when it comes to how cliched his characters can be, but technologically his film making methods are like no other.
