My dad's been harrassing me about watching it, and I plan to once it's out on DVD here.. while trying to convince me he said he enjoyed it more than 'A Seperation', have you seen it? What did you like more?

prince0gotham wrote:I remember having a lot of problems with it. Cinematography was excelent, mood and atmosphere were creepy and suspenseful, Mitchum was great and the way he played the vilain made most of the great latter vilains in cinema history possible.
Everything else though was ranging from sloppy even for those days to very annoying. Editing was all over the place at times, there's a lot of things that don't make sense or would've if they were executed properly and closer to the book. I've heard the book's themes were a lot more mature and deep than what we see in the movie but due to censorship or just what was concidered offensive and unforgivable to put in a movie back then those things were either silenced or removed from the story. The fairy-tale/dreemy feel of the film doesn't excuse the unanswered questions towards the motivations of the characters. The acting of the kids was pretty annoying. Mitchum really did feel like a dark force, a storm of evil that you just can't escape from, but the mistakes he made in the end he had no excuse for, at least the way they were shown in the movie. They say he was supposed to look and be pathetic, to howl like a wounded dog, cowering in that shed, but the way it comes off is so confusing and poorly edited that I can't even speak about it. It feels rushed, lacking explanation and reason and the shift from the dark force to this just doesn't feel right. The angry mob thing afterwards is even worse. It happens unnaturally fast and it goes nowhere. Basically you don't really know what the hell's going on in the last 20 minutes, because almost nothing in the rest of the movie prepares you for that kind of development and sometimes that's alright but this seemed just... detached...
This is Charles Laughton's only movie and it's no wonder since he hads loads of problems with the production and everything surrounding it.

He's by the book, that's it.
Jennifer Connelly looked sexy and tanned up, she really needs to go out and take some serious roles!
