Shame (2011)

I just watched it. WOW.

Amazing from beginning to end. And Michael Fassbender plays one of the best performances I've seen in years. He starts great and doesn't stop till he just crushes the roof and keeps going up. It's mesmerizing to see him.
I loved McQueen's subtle directing, and I loved Carey on this. It's a different role from the characters she has been playing these last few years. She proved her range is much larger.

And sth obvious but I'll say it anyway: Fassbender should have won the Oscar this year. He's in a whole other level. Brad Pitt was really good, but when you see Fassy in Shame it's just  that he wasn't even nominated.

Same here, silent night atmosphere on my side, perfect.
How do you find someone who has spent a lifetime covering his tracks?

For some, he was a guardian angel. To others, a ghost who never quite fit in.

lmk what you think!

kind of curious to see what allstar will say. I think he'll have a hard time denying that this performance is more emotionally intense than dicapcrios

Re-posted from Last movie you watched thread:

Image
Shame (2011) - Steve McQueen

Such a powerful, cinematic experience. Congrats to both Mulligan (Sissy) and Fassbender (Brandon), but clearly the main draw here was Michael, he was completely stripped down (in every sense of the word) - be it emotionless sexual predator or a person unable to love anyone, except maybe his sister (?), Brandon is struggling to find one last straw of humanity within himself and the results are both mesmerizing and terrifying; once revealed those experimental results are pretty hard to look upon but at the same time terrific, exciting and unforgettable. In the end, I felt washed out, just like the main character. Shame is one of those rare films you can't get out of your head for a long time, one of those precious dramas that somehow manage to glue onto your thoughts and the only way to get it all out is to start analysing it - Will Brandon receive his final solution, will he emerge as a victor over his inner nightmares and over his infectious addiction? Still trying to figure that out.

VERDICT: *****
