..needless to say, your establishing sequence was poorly constructed, and it's hard to appreciate the rest of the short when your first impression is skewed.
Also, subtlety for the sake of subtlety isn't artistic, it's just weak. Don't tell your viewers they have to analyze everything simply because you couldn't come up with a cohesive plot.

I'm sad you feel that way. Can I ask - why do you think the establishing sequence is poorly constructed? I am only asking because I want to do better in the future.
And I can tell you that it is not subtlety for the sake of subtlety. The point of this blurriness is to create a kind of dreamy world. It should somehow underline the fakeness of the place he is in.
There is (as you say) almost no plot, which is the point. Almost nothing is being given away to the viewer, not even a background story - just som action. We (the students who did this short) wanted to try giving much of these details in the action as possible. We wanted to try doing a piece (not neccesarily a good story) based on the definition of a palindrome. Basically we wanted to try something different.
I appreciate your criticism.

This is the first film I (and the rest of the guys behind it) have ever done.
