Tom Hanks is set to play Fred Rogers in You Are My Friend. The film is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. In the story, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed. Minghella and Shary Shirazi will oversee the project for TriStar Pictures. Production is set to begin in September. CAA and UTA brokered the deal.

Based on what I know about Fred Rogers, this is the most perfect casting. I still need to see the documentary though.

I mean, nobody outside the US knows him so that's pretty normal, there's nothing to fix. His show was mostly broadcasted only in America and it wasn't an international phenomenon like Sesame Street. If it hadn't been for last year's documentary, I wouldn't have any idea who he was either.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but it's not hard to find out who he is and what he's about.
