Before going into a film, I let all my prejudice aside. Anticipation doesn't have to be like this.

84th Academy Awards: 2012

Post George March 8, 2011, 5:36 pm

Predictions this early can be fun. I tried predicting the 2011 Academy Award nominees about a year in advance (March 13, 2010), and this is what I came up with:

Best Picture (5/10)
All Good Things
Black Swan
The Fighter
Hereafter
How Do You Know?
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The Tree of Life
True Grit
The Way Back
Alternates: Blue Valentine, The Conspirator, The King's Speech, Rabbit Hole, Somewhere, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Town

Best Director (2/5)
Joel & Ethan Coen for True Grit
Christopher Nolan for Inception
Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life
David O. Russell for The Fighter
Peter Weir for The Way Back
Alternates: Ben Affleck for The Town, Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, James L. Brooks for How Do You Know?, Lisa Cholodenko for The Kids Are All Right, Sophia Coppola for Somewhere, Clint Eastwood for Hereafter, David Fincher for The Social Network, Derek Cianfrance for Blue Valentine, John Cameron Mitchell for Rabbit Hole, Robert Redford for The Conspirator, Edgar Wright for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Best Actor (2/5)
Jeff Bridges for True Grit
Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine/All Good Things
Leonardo DiCaprio for Inception/Shutter Island
Colin Farrell for The Way Back
Colin Firth for The King's Speech
Alternates: Aaron Eckhart for Rabbit Hole, Ed Harris for Touching Home, Jack Nicholson for How Do You Know?, Brad Pitt for The Tree of Life, Benicio Del Toro for Somewhere, Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter

Best Actress (2/5)
Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right
Helena Bonham Carter for The King's Speech
Kirsten Dunst for All Good Things
Julianne Moore for The Kids Are All Right
Natalie Portman for Black Swan
Alternates: Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Anne Hathaway for Love and Other Drugs, Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine

Best Supporting Actor (1/5)
Christian Bale for The Fighter
Josh Brolin for True Grit
Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Inception
Ed Harris for The Way Back
Sean Penn for The Tree of Life
Alternates: Matt Damon for True Grit, Jon Hamm for The Town, Mark Strong for The Way Back

Best Supporting Actress (1/5) *Could have been 2 but I predicted Helena Bonham Carter for Best Actress
Amy Adams for The Fighter
Marion Cotillard for Inception
Bryce Dallas Howard for Hereafter
Mila Kunis for Black Swan
Michelle Monaghan for Somewhere
Alternates: Ellen Page for Inception, Rebecca Hall for The Town, Dianne Wiest for Rabbit Hole, Evan Rachel Wood for The Conspirator

Not so bad. I think I'll do try this again and see what happens.

George, compared to the disaster I've seen from other guesses yours is pretty good

Anyhoo this is my thoughts just based on pedigree, past work, and hunches.

Best Picture + (Directors)
The Ides of March (George Clooney)
Dream House (Jim Sheridan)
Hugo Cabret (Martin Scorsese)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher)
War Horse (Steven Spielberg)
Moneyball (Bennett Miller)
The Beaver (Jodie Foster)
Miral (Julian Schnabel)
Sarah's Key (Gilles Paquet-Brenner)
Contagion (Steven Soderbergh)

Darkhorse entrances
The Debt (John Madden)
Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks)
Super 8 (J.J Abrams)
The Tree of Life (Terrance Malick)
My Week with Marilyn (Simon Curtis)

Best Director
Jodie Foster (The Beaver)
David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
George Clooney (The Ides of March)
Steven Spielberg (War Horse)
Julian Schnabel (Miral)

*Can't judge acting awards till I see the films ;)
*I think Bale's performance will be sidelined to supporting again seeing his role as the Priest was initially reported as limited, who knows though I'm hoping for a full on best actor for him
*Love the cast for Tinker, Tailor, etc but can't see the director and the writers pulling off above decent

13 Women is defiantly going to be out in December. J.Edgar I am more so taking a leap of faith because Clint usually puts out a film every year and it has been shooting for weeks now.

I will book it... against you though

Question is, are you willing?

Next Oscar night, hell since you said nominee when they announce the nominees in January we can put down a hefty wager.
