Sounds Bond-esque, but not Bond. Wonder if he is going for the next best thing. Also curious if this is just a very naive description from PW ...dormouse7 wrote: ↑March 5th, 2019, 3:20 pmChristopher Nolan’s Next Movie Described as ‘North by Northwest’ Meets ‘Inception’

Best comment in the thread so far.AsianVersionOfET wrote: ↑January 26th, 2019, 1:43 amIt’s going to be hard R (perhaps even NC-17) and it’s gonna be a balls to the wall porno epic, shot entirely in IMAX, with multiple timelines all merging into one orgasmic conclusion.
It's going to be his eyes wide shut.
Sounds like Dunkirk’s sense of paranoia and invisible enemies will make a return

Glorious news. I long for the same kind of excitement and curiosity I had during the production of Inception.
Thank God some action. Let’s see what WB says and how accurate this is. Perhaps it’s misdirection. Dunkirk wasn’t your average WW2 picture so saying Romantic Thriller could be broadly interpreted as well.

Here's hoping it is actually going to be a sexy romantic thriller. Nolan seems to make it a point to bat away his critics with each film. Interstellar showed that he wasn't a 'cold' filmmaker, Dunkirk showed that he didn't have to rely on convoluted plots smothered with expository dialogue. Maybe this is his chance of showing that he doesn't just make sexless cinema?
The North by Northwest comparison excites me to no end, it has very little in way of actual sex, but it's just drizzling with sexuality nontheless. I would be very happy with Nolan going full spectacle-Hitchcock with this one if true.

I thought about Bond too.cclem wrote: ↑March 5th, 2019, 5:55 pmSounds Bond-esque, but not Bond. Wonder if he is going for the next best thing. Almost feels like this is a Bond "audition" of sorts, lol. (Not really, he could take it any time if he wanted.) But specifically because of the romance aspect of this. That's never been a major point in Nolan's films, and that's a huge component of Bond films.
If this is truly a romance-thriller, it feels like Nolan has put all the cards on the table for EON and the Broccolis to admit that the franchise is inevitably his to take in the near future. Almost as if he's challenging them by saying, "What reason would there be for me not to take over this franchise?" Part of me feels like a lot of his films are kind of the "lead up" in his career for taking Bond.
And to add to the comment about batting off the critics with each film, I agree and I think it's genius. I think he looks at each new film to sort of "address" the things he slightly lacks in previous films; it's good for growth, and I think it shows everyone that, "Hey, I heard your criticisms and I got better. What else, now?"
I don't think that's his end-goal as an artist necessarily (to swat critics away like flies), but I think he's got legacy in mind, and he's making an argument at the end of the day (not based on ego) that he's the best, and it'll be hard for critics to combat that. I think he's definitely a dude who thinks ahead. He plays chess with his craft.
And he's reminding me of the greats more and more, like Kubrick is. He's tackling Sci-Fi, Action, Romance, Thriller, Adventure, Mystery, Noir, Superhero/Comic Book, War, Period/Historical. He's going to be a rare all-encompassing director across the board in 20 years time.
