Of some of the ideas thrown around, I think we can safely rule out:
- Howard Hughes, especially if it's supposed to be his best script, you'd assume it would be released in the fall to be more of an awards contendor.
- A "family" film. Obviously this is unlikely in general because of Nolan's traditional style, but the film is also released the same weekend as 2 animated films, as well as the week before another one, so we can safely assume this is counterprogramming.
- A sword and sandals movie. I mainly find this unlikely considering Hollywood's recent history with sword and sandal movies flopping at the box office. Of all people that could make one a hit, it is Nolan, but it does seem too risky.

I also think it's safe to assume there will be some amount of action in this, as all of his July releases include some amount of action. Looking at July 2020 release dates, there will be a TON of family films (Minions 2, Bob's Burgers, SpongeBob, untitled Sony Animation film, Jungle Cruise, Ghostbusters...) so this is already likely to be even more successful considering as of now it doesn't have a lot of competition in action movies. Dunkirk was successful in a summer FULL of action movies, think of how this will do with far less competition?
Batman Begins wasn’t a ‘family film’ per se, neither were the other two DK films, but I think it’s safe to say lots of families went. Tons of pre teens and teens probably went no? Genre titles can be inadequate and misleading.

Interstellar was at heart totally a family film, for all of its other brilliant elements.

I think Nolan will take a risk. No rehash of stuff he’s done before.
Although families went, you wouldn't classify those films as "family films". Not saying families won't go to this next movie, but considering the main competition that month are kids movies, I think the only audience Nolan will lose are kids, who are already less likely to see it.

All I want for this is to be an epic character-driver thriller of some sort.

Would love the pornstar thing to be true but considering the summer release its probably something more spectacle-related.

Nolan has said in the past that he wants to make movies anyone can go and see. The pornstar movie thing is extremely unlikely.

That same blog reported just last week that the upcoming Black Widow movie is going to be R-rated.

That should tell you what you need to know about them.

When do you think we'll hear some news about what this is about, can this only take a few weeks, or days ?

Another poster made the point the release is 18 months away, so maybe as soon as this week. Dunkirk’s initial announcement before the title and synopsis was revealed was 22 months.

We went from “It’s too far away. Probably 2021 or 2022” to “it’s coning in 18 months” so quick. Curious to know what it’ll be about but I’m just so happy to know that we’re geting something next year.
I wonder if he’ll release a prologue possibly with Star Wars in December.
