In Vegas on vacay. Gonna see this shit in glorious 70mm IMAX film tomorrow.

I finally got to watch Dunkirk today. I know, I'm late to the party, but the movie only released on the 27th where I live. Saw it this morning in IMAX Laser, and enjoyed it. Here are my quick thoughts:

The movie is tense, absorbing, and action packed from start to finish. A visual spectacle that is best watched in IMAX. Nolan and Hoytema take center stage as they demonstrate their visual prowess. The duo paint a grim and horrifying picture, that will make you truly feel what it was like to be a solider trying to survive at the beaches of Dunkirk.

I enjoyed the non-linear style of storytelling - aided by some smart editing from Lee Smith. I can see him getting an Oscar nomination, and potentially even winning. Zimmer's score will make your heart race. I'm actually listening to it as I'm typing this out. TICK TICK TICK TICK.

Tom Hardy is easily the standout actor. His dogfight scenes in the air are gripping. Fionn Whitehead and Harry Styles - making their big screen debut - were good, too. It was an ensemble piece where all the actors did their job to serve the story.

However, just like Interstellar, I had a hard time understanding some of the dialogue. Not a big problem, since there's hardly any dialogue in the movie, but I just wish I was able to hear what the characters were saying.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Already planning on when I can watch it again.

If you have a chance, see it in another cinema. I was lucky - I got two cinemas (IMAX 70mm and 1:43 Laser) with good sound and intelligible dialog, even though the IMAX was a more bone-shaking experience. But my brother-in-law went to a 70mm (non-IMAX) and could not understand anything, not even the officers on the mole. When the movie finished, he popped into the standard digital showing and said the dialogue was all clear in that one.

I'm planning on doing just that. We only have two IMAX cinemas in my city, so I'll be checking the other one this Friday after work. I'm also going to sit three to four rows from the back instead of sitting right at the back - which is what I did today. Might watch the movie again in regular format the week after.

I wish I had the free time to see it again on IMAX 1570 as it was one the most incredible cinematic experience of my life. As of now, my rating is a solid 9. The realism of the sounds of war was beyond horrifying. Probably Nolan's most complete film.

Hmm, strange. I thought that adjective least describes this film from a story/plot perspective alone.

If you're describing something different than I am when using that word, then I understand. Otherwise, I feel it's his least complete film since Doodlebug.
