People are idiotic. I don't normally feel things like this but when I hear someone I know say they thought Dunkirk was "boring," I can't take their opinion seriously on any other movies they talk about.

It happens almost every time a work of art from someone notable gets aimed at the public while also receiving massive acclaim from critics (aka Chris Nolan lol). There's a rubber band effect where a bunch of people get mad that they don't like or get the thing being acclaimed and they try to convince themselves and others that it's flat-out awful by using a single criticism. It's a pattern. It happened with La La Land (it's racist), The Dark Knight Rises (it has plot holes), Mad Max (no characters), Interstellar (makes no logical sense), Inception (too confusing), Dunkirk (boring), etc. even recent stuff like The Last Jedi.

Re the trolls - Several tweeters were also saying people only liked Dunkirk because of Harry, Hardy or Nolan.

Master Virgo - I don’t really care what people think about the film. I know I love it, just as lots of other people. And that’s enough.

It’s just that some of the arguments that accompony these opinions (like it’s “boring”) bother me a bit. But it’s alright.

Meh, I like to imagine the people making these complaints think Disney and Marvel films are the pinnacle of filmmaking.
Doesn't mean that's the case, but it certainly helps me shrug off their complaints.

Why people think opinions on twitter (or online for that matter) represent the general consensus on Dunkirk, I don't understand. Look at the film's box office legs. Look at its cinemascore. Those are factual things that tell you the general public enjoyed it well enough. Don't let loud noise fool you.

I’m well aware of that. I’ve spent enough time on Twitter to know how much people tweet stuff that isn’t worth reading lol.

And I must say that the vast majority of people loved the film from what I’ve read. And that’s the most important - not the awards, obviously.

EDIT: and btw, Del Toro deserved that Golden Globe! Lol

Agreed. Guillermo del Toro definitely deserved the award. He's amazing & the Shape of Water was fantastic. All of the nominees deserved it and several more that didn't get the nom. I think the nomination is great because it's a recognition of the hard work and achievement of each director (cast & crew).

Edit: For those wondering if the drink comment was true, just saw this in Vanity Fair: "Notes from the ground at the Globes—where Oprah reigned, and Christopher Nolan needed a drink."

Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan, at least, seemed to be game for that. The director, whose film was nominated for three Golden Globes but walked away empty-handed, was ready to leave after the second loss: “We’ve got one more to lose, and then we can go drink,” he said to a pal.
