Finally saw "The Shape of Water". Pretty good film, but certainly not worth the precursor hype, especially for Best Director since it was pretty conventional. Nothing overly special about it outside of a few very beautiful moments and some solid production design and cinematography.

I'd still rather see it win Best Picture than "Three Billboards" or "Get Out" (I haven't seen that many nominated films yet), but I still think "Dunkirk" is an overall better film.

Also while del Toro winning Best Director won't get me too upset since I like him as a filmmaker, Nolan's work this year is FAR superior.

Just my two cents. Obviously biased a bit, but still...

I'm just going to pretend that Guillermo del Toro is being retroactively awarded Best Director for Pan's Labyrinth and not the half-baked genre mashup that he's winning the Oscar for this year. Most underwhelming winner since Tom Hooper tbh
