BP winner of past 5 years (9 out of the past 10 years) have won screenplay noms and many of them won nothing else but that. A film can have best actor, best director, best cinematography, best visual effects, and best score and still lose to a film that won best screenplay.

To think otherwise is ludicrous.
Sadly, this. It'll be an interesting (and undoubtedly disappointing) awards show, watching it lose to everything that's more politically topical. Plus my girlfriend and I always bet on who will win in each category. Last year she had to watch all of Nolan's films because she lost  (which, thank fuck, because I hate Harry Potter...)

So it seems like Nolan might be the frontrunner so far for Best Director.... I'm cautious in saying that but.... it seems like he has more Awards than the others so far.

Also what're the odds Dunkirk only wins one Oscar and its for Best Director? (assuming both sound awards aren't in the bag)
No, del Toro has won more.
In the directing arena, del Toro is outpacing his film, surging to 11 wins including those from the Dallas-Forth Worth, Kansas City, St. Louis and San Francisco collectives. “Dunkirk” helmer Christopher Nolan is a few steps back with eight, while six other directors have been recognized so far.

And del Toro is still leading here by 10 to 7.

Including this award, overall, I think it goes up to 9 wins for Nolan.

Not that they really matter, it'd be interesting to see where the Globes go with directing. At the moment, I think they'll go with del Toro. I read from one of the Oscar pundits that they’re kinda annoyed with Nolan over not holding a press conference for Dunkirk for them. They're kinda known for attention-seeking, so I can see them not voting for Nolan out of spite.

Dunkirk and Nolan will at least have the support of one Oscar voter.

ACADEMY MEMBER SHARES BALLOT PREFERENCES

In years past The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg and others have run articles that quote opinions from this or that anonymous Academy member about Oscar contenders. But they never run them until the nominations have been announced in late January. Hollywood Elsewhere feels it’s more worthwhile to run these opinions now, while the nomination ballots are still being mulled over.

This morning I spoke to a director-writer with several reputable credits. I’ve re-ordered the sequence of some quotes, pruned and condensed some of them, and in some cases run them verbatim.

Best Picture: “Definitely Dunkirk. I think Dunkirk was an exceptional job of directing. I thought it was an amazing picture, a David Lean-level thing, a throwback to another time. Big Picture filming. For years younger generations have been saying ‘yeah, we’re used to watching these things on iPads’ but Nolan is saying ‘no, no, you’re missing the point…these are movies for the big screen…you’re missing the point.’ And those people who’ve been saying that [Dunkirk] wasn’t emotional enough? If you didn’t feel the emotion during that last swooping shot of Tom Hardy‘s plane out of gas and gliding over the beach…if you didn’t feel the emotion in that shot…c’mon.

[...]

Best Director: “Again, Nolan. I have a lot of respect for [Get Out]’s Jordan Peele…he’s just not my idea of a Best Director nominee.. I also thought that Guillermo del Toro‘s work on The Shape of Water…it was like watching an old cobbler work…he purposely kept the creature work to a minimum….it made me feel like I was watching the story of the projectionist in Cinema Paradiso or, you know, the filmmaking in Amelie….it was like when I was a kid, falling in love with filmmaking.”

Studio tentpoles “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Dunkirk,” fantasy “The Shape of Water,” and independent comedy “Lady Bird” are among the nominees for the Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards.

In the period film category, “Dunkirk” and “The Shape of Water” were nominated with “Darkest Hour,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” and “The Post.” In the fantasy field, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was nominated along with “Beauty and the Beast,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and “Wonder Woman.” The contemporary film noms are “Lady Bird,” “Downsizing,” “Get Out,” “Logan,” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
