So thanks for ignoring my question. Gotcha.

You know, normally I'm not open to other interpretations and alterations to what the director does because I don't have a particular image or vision for it that I can tangibly perceive. Thanks to wonderful software, it's possible to make these kinds of these things happen. Nolan isn't perfect; he has many things I would have changed in some of my favorite films of his. He has the best base for films I have ever seen though, and he is just but minor tweaks away in my opinion.

I get the ending, except for the fade-out. Never heard why he did that. I think it throws first-time viewers in for a loop. I'd like to know what the intent behind it was, rather than just "That was the intent."

The intent could have been that Nolan wanted that shake up. He wanted the viewers to feel how Tommy felt. "ooooohkay this is finally over-wait-it's still going." Tommy seems to have some kind of realization that he may have made it out alive in this situation, but that the war is still going to continue and he's going to be thrust into it again when he's just gotten home.

I respect that interpretation. I think that's what the shot was for Tommy anyway, but that may be what further emphasizes it.

Again, still pretty happy about the fact they go back to Tommy to begin with. Anybody else probably would have just ended on the plane... well, except Sam Raimi. ;)

The funny thing about this whole thing (which makes me question every theory about it) is that if Fionn didn't improvise/do whatever he did which impressed Nolan, the movie would've probably ended with the burning plane shot as written. But again you truly make the movie in the editing room.

If the intention of the fade-out was as @Bacon said then it did definitely work.
