I noticed you guys talking about box office forecasts and mentioning Boxoffice.com. I actually work with the site and just wanted to chime in here to say we're definitely on the somewhat optimistic end. This has been a tricky film to project for many obvious reasons but we think there's a lot of upside. Ultimately though, I definitely hope we all keep in mind it could open much lower and still be set for success. Staying power is probably going to be very strong in the weeks ahead, and I suspect international grosses will be excellent (especially the U.K.).
Excellent. Thanks for your input.
You bet! And thanks for reading! Love following the threads here. I've been a major fan of Nolan's films over 15 years now and it's definitely exciting to be around like-minded folk that are as amped up for this film as I am. Really hoping it breaks out not just as a number cruncher but also as someone who has been inspired by the man's work on a repeated basis.

Looking quite promising. My 578 seat IMAX is currently 71% sold at 6p showing tonight and 77% sold 9p show.

I’m very intrigued to see how this does at the box office. I mean, I’ve been reading that there is a relatively strong chance it won’t play with the GA, but, from what I remember, the same was said about Inception and Interstellar.

When do we get the cinemascore, tomorrow or at the end of the weekend?

For reference, Inception and Interstellar both received a B+ cinemascore.

Edit: Interesting tweet by a Box Office pundit;

#Dunkirk IMAX70mm: Thrilling film taking u inside war men wage. Will please critics, Acad voters & Nolan devotees much. Tough sell to others

I'm not very optimistic. I think it will do very very well in the UK for obvious reasons, but I'm not sure how much a neutral audience would care about a war movie about another country, without typical romantic leads or personal story.

I'm currently on a work trip in Kazakhstan. I watched the movie in Russian (Good thing it was pretty much a silent movie and my Russian was good enough). My showing was about 1/3 full at 19.00. One couple walked out halfway through the movie. The audience reaction seemed muted after the movie ended despite WW2 subject being pretty relevant in the former USSR countries for obvious reasons. So... Not sure about the movie having long legs in countries other than the UK. I would be extremely happy to be wrong. It's a good movie. It's a brave movie.

I think the legs will be pretty surprising. Perhaps not to the level of Interstellar and certainly not Inception, but something closer to 3.5x. Gravity was somewhat similar in its focus on intense spectacle and that had fantastic legs. Of course, Dunkirk features a more experimental structure, which will be jarring to some of the GA, but the spectacle and tension will likely be appealing and satisfying to most. Cinemascore so often doesn't mean much imo, but I'm expecting a B or B+.
