Like, it may actually fall out of the imdb top 250 and its Amazon rating is like 2.8/5.

It kind of looks like public perception for it is similar to "Manchester by the Sea" -- especially on Amazon. Critics love it, and the general public is very mixed.
My suggestion for you is to never judge audience reception based on 300 or so number of votes.£

The Amazon reviews are comedy gold. 28% are one star reviews.
Absolute worst sound scoring of all time. I don't know if Mr. Nolan is bass deaf from years rolling around town with 2 15's in his trunk or not
In the scene where the men are trapped in a boat ( somewhere )and somebody is shooting holes through the hull, where were they ?,who's shooting at them ? From where ? There didn't appear to be any Germans on the beach.Incoherent
Everyone was generic tropes: wet sad, whiny, or covered by a mask
Horrible movie, there's no dialogue it start you out completely confused leaves spots in the movie completely unfinished the only reason we kept watching it was hoping it would get better. totally horrible!
The characters were mostly cowards and losers and the action was not believable
DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE!!![...]Not only is this not the best war movie ever, I'm going to say it was the WORST war movie of all time and in the top 10 worst movies ever
Nolan is a hack of a director. Just look over his other movies and it's all the same formula. Droning music, stupid dialogue, dumb plot, rips ideas from other movies. Insomnia is an exception but that was a remake of an already great movie. Pass this Call of Duty, mindless action, joke up
I never cared about any of the characters and every time a soldier was shot ,he just fell to the ground. No blood, and instant death.(especially in the opening scenes).I found it laughable..A typical 'boys own story' type of film
Dear Lord.

Since the DVD came out I have been searching for Dunkirk on Twitter and viewing the Latest tweets.

I see some of the same kinds of comments on Twitter.

Timelines are confusing.
No heroism on the ground.
No backstories. Didn't care about the characters.
No explanation of the event.
Slow.
Boring (which sometimes seems like a euphemism for no gore).

And it does seem to me like most people tweet about Dunkirk LOVE it and some people HATE it with not a lot of middle ground. I do think it is divisive.

I think some people were expecting a typical war film and hate it because that's not what it is.

This is exactly what it is. Almost everytime I hear criticism of this movie it's because there is no character development ('I wanted to know and care about the characters'. Why?) or the timelines are too confusing. Some people just can't think outside the box and want a movie like this to be straightforward. They are used to all the other war movies they've seen before that when they see this it's like 'I don't want this war movie, where is my regular war movie' and decide to hate it. Hell even furthermore those are the criticisms for people who hate all of Nolan's movies. I never went into this movie expecting it to be like Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. I was hoping it wasn't that and I got my wish.

I see that many people find it's boring. I can't wrap my mind around what it's like to feel that way. Maybe the music doesn't "connect" to them so all the actions scenes feel dull. Maybe they really need to like the characters to feel any thrill in the action, though I doubt that considering Mad Max Fury Road. Maybe they have so much trouble trying to make sense of the plot that they just zone out. I don't know.

I've watched Dunkirk six times now, and it feels a tiny bit slow during the exposition scenes with Keneth Branagh and when the soldiers wander the beach, but the movie as a whole isn't slow at all and it doesn't ever feel "artsy" as some describe it. I watched Macbeth (2015) this year and that's ten times slower in comparison.

You know this film is doing pretty well for itself when Screen Junkies and CinemaSins doesn't even come up with an Honest Trailers or Everything Wrong With video on it, respectively.

^ Who knows. Probably in the making.

Also fyi Cinemasins guy loved it. The people at ScreenJunkies have mixed-ish positive-ish feelings about it, on the other hand.

They normally make them kind of prior to the home video release. My guess is they find a bootleg to figure out which exact time stamps they would edit the video and audio, then when legally able to they get a physical copy of the film and redo some of those parts to their satisfaction. That way, they can get it up within like 24 hours of it hitting the shelves.

So I think we're in the clear! Though I would have loved to see them.
