Interstellar, 2008 draft vs. the finished Movie.

So I just finished reading Jonah Nolan's 2008 draft. I read somewhere that C. Nolan said he left the first part of the story, the part on Earth, alone. I'm not sure that's fair, because it is pretty different.. the fair way to put it is that the Earth part of the story is the most recognizable. The moment they leave Earth, nothing is the same, although the ending is again.. recognizable, but still very different. I'd say the 2008 script is efficient, and one could almost make that movie today, retitle it, rework the first act, and you wouldn't see what it has in common with Interstellar. Go read it.. it's not hard to find on the internet. I'm not sure if I should post a link or not. So I won't... but beware SPOILERS below, if you don't want to know the differences. I'll start something below in a bit, but I'll give you guys a chance to read it if you haven't.

The only thing I'll say is that I like the shooting script much better. I'm sure the 2008 draft would've undergone more polish, as it's a little rough around the edges, but the story being told in the original just isn't as thought provoking, and clearly was not a Christopher Nolan kind of movie in that form. But because it's so different, I wouldn't mind seeing the original script out of curiosity... but I wouldn't take it over what was actually produced.

The basic premise is very similar, but I agree that outside of that it's almost a totally different movie.

I would almost really like to see it made too because it could very nearly stand on it's own and we could see some totally different stuff.

They should have made both! It would have been like Armageddon and Deep Impact or The Illusionist and The Prestige. Those movies bear less in common than people like to think.

Overall, I much prefer the version we got.

Sorry for being so late getting back to you. A job interview came up the first part of the week, so I was busy prepping for that. Anyhow...

Sounds like we're on the same page. The major thing that struck me was just how much it didn't feel at all like a Chris Nolan movie. This is almost an adaptation, and if you've ever read the source material of his other films, like the Prestige, he takes significant liberties with it. Chris made it much more interesting and complex in many ways. The ending didn't resonate much emotionally. Too much time had passed, and having him come back to find a descendent, instead of his daughter just didn't resonate near as well.

It'd be cool to see a polished version of this script made, but at the same time, it's not something I would get too excited about.

Really though, I think I am just so in love with the entire premise of this movie. That's why I wouldn't have minded seeing another very similar to it. I love the idea of really legitimately traveling to a new galaxy. Can you imagine centuries later what they would be teaching in elementary schools? Instead of talking about Columbus or The Mayflower it would be Cooper and the Lazarus missions and the Endurance.

Think about our whole civilization being built from scratch as an already developed species. I don't know. I love it.
