Nope, his character was completely unnecessary aside from being utilized for spectacle and perhaps get across certain ideas/themes. Was he originally in the script? Nolan should have cut that 10 to 15 minutes out completely to cut back the running time a bit...

Awesome character. Damon killed it. When he walks away from Coop monologuing…. chills. Hell no he shouldn't have been cut. Added a whole other layer to the film and fleshed it out thematically. Fantastic third act beginning.

Agreed, Damon should be in contention for best supporting actor.

I really dont get why people say he should have been cut...his segment was the most fascinating part of the film...completed by the docking sequence
