Very few engine concepts exist that have both high efficiency and high thrust, and the only ones I'm aware of involve continuous nuclear detonations.
I thought they used the rocket to launch from earth because they didn't want to use up precious fuel to leave earth's atmosphere, which can be used more wisely when going to the other planets. Using a rocket to get them out of the earth's atmosphere seems logical.
