I agree that's a more significant influence. Entertainment Weekly probably didn't think about it and just listed his most popular movie. Not that I wouldn't love a futuristic sci-fi epic by Nolan... Also, I hope they told Wally they were inspired by Fritz Lang. Good God, just look at this cinematography.

M is a truly stunning film. So is
Metropolis of course.
After thinking about it more, I suspect that Lang's Mabuse trilogy might have some influence too, with its vast and elaborate crime networks and the continual (and cruel) manipulation of the innocent by a diabolical master planner. I would guess that Nolan is a fan of those films.
