I'm not sure how to take this. He can't be referring to batman when he says it's all about the fx. And if he is then he contradicts himself in the next line.

This must be taken out of context. I think when he's saying that it's all about the special effects he's referring to films in general.

“It’s strange. It’s a German-American-Franco-Belgian film about an American in Paris played by an Englishman,” Caine said of his latest movie Mr. Morgan’s Last Love...
Caine will next be seen in highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, a far cry from sitting on a park bench eating a ham and cheese baguette in Paris.
“Batman has very good actors in it, but it’s all about the special effects. A film like this is about the people. It’s more interesting as an actor.”

I think he might be just referring to effects in general. The Dark Knight Rises obviously has levels of action, explosions, and technology that a European drama piece doesn't have.

I don't think he meant that as a criticism, more just pointing out that TDRK is an action film where the visuals and actions are at the centre of the story. It doesn't mean that the characters are weak, it just means that they're not the only things telling the story.

I'm gona go with him talking about movies in general, that movies today rely solely on special effects. This movie, however, is all about the characters and won't be relying on any special effects because the character development will be remarkable.

Caine is old school. Everything aside from an actor, a camera and a costume is a special effect to him.

I have a theory.

In Batman Begins after Bruce's parents die, Alfred comes to Bruce and says: I thought I might prepare a little supper, and comforts Bruce.

In The Dark Knight after Rachel dies, Alfred comes to Bruce and says: I thought I'd prepare a little breakfast, and comforts Bruce.

What if in The Dark Knight Rises, Alfred dies, and Bruce is truly alone, with no-one to comfort him.

Just a thought, let me know what you think. : )

Bruce Wayne starves due to nobody bringing him breakfast. Clearly a statement about how reliant the rich are on others. BOOM, there's your social commentary right there.

It would be an awful ending though.
